The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Department of Physics and the Max-Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI) invites applications for a

W3-S-Professorship in “Experimental Physics” with Emphasis on Ultrafast Phenomena that will result in the joint appointment of a Director at the Max Born Institute

from October 1st 2022.

MBI is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V. (FVB) and is a member of the Leibniz Association. MBI conducts basic research in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics in the interaction of light with matter and pursues applications that emerge from this research.

The new appointee will be a member of the Board of Directors of the MBI and will assume the scientific leadership over division C of the institute. The candidate is expected to pursue research in a frontier area of modern physics with ultrafast lasers. Possible themes include, but are not limited to, the interaction of matter with ultrashort laser pulses, the physics of high average power lasers and their applications, ultrafast nanophotonics, and time-resolved structure research based on the use of ultrashort electron and/or x-ray pulses, complementing continuing research activities at the MBI. A more detailed description of the responsibilities of a MBI Director is given in the statutes of the institute, and will be made available upon request. The new appointee will contribute to the teaching in Physics (2 SWS) at the Humboldt University Berlin (HU Berlin).

The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the Berliner Hochschulgesetz.

Additional requirements:

  • an internationally leading role in the area of experimental physics with lasers
  • experience in the supervision of research groups
  • management of scientific projects and the acquisition of third party funding
  • experience in national and international collaborations

Expectations: commitment to cooperate with national and international partners in the framework of, e.g., "Sonderforschungsbereiche" and research networks; strong motivation for contributing to the teaching in physics at the HU Berlin.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and MBI aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and strongly encourage qualified female scientists to apply. They are family-friendly institutions and information about the family situation of applicants is therefore welcome. Researchers from abroad are welcome to apply. Disabled persons will be given preferential consideration in case of equal qualification. People with a migration background are specifically encouraged to apply.
