The Department of Biology in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus (UBCO) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the area of microbiology.  Pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights code, and in recognition of the historic underrepresentation of women in science, the selection will be restricted to individuals who identify as female with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.

The successful candidate will have a PhD and post-doctoral experience in microbiology or a related field. The candidate’s proposed research should have applications to one or more of the department’s areas of strategic focus: human health, sustainable agriculture, and conservation ecology.  Specific areas of relevant research activity in the department include: inflammation; gut microbiota; plant-microbe interactions; soil ecology; wine and viticulture; and wildlife disease.

Candidates will demonstrate evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful, collegial, and conducive learning and working environment. The successful candidates will teach in their core area of research as well as other related courses and have a demonstrable commitment to teaching excellence. Candidates will have a competitive record of scholarly contributions in their respective field of research, and the ability to establish a strong externally funded research program. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to further development of the curriculum, supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and fulfill service obligations to the University and community.

The Department of Biology is a dynamic and highly interdisciplinary department of 28 faculty members, and approximately 90 graduate students, with research clusters in conservation ecology, biomedical research, and plant biochemistry, as well as active engagement in the scholarship of teaching.  The campus has an animal care facility, greenhouse, and shared instrumentation for next-generation sequencing, advanced microscopy and chemical analysis.    Please visit https://biology.ok.ubc.ca/ to learn more.
