KEY FUNCTIONS

Head & Neck Research - Program Oversight
  • Senior advisor responsible for the coordination and management of the day-to-day research program operations under the supervision of the Faculty Program Director.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with institutional, departmental and extramural faculty and staff to assure advancement of programmatic goals and projects.
  • Manage strategies to enhance collaboration between investigators and clinical or research scientists.
  • Assist in the strategic planning for the development of clinical protocols and correlative studies.
  • Facilitate in preparation of research, administrative and regulatory documents required for grant and protocol submissions.
  • Liaise between faculty and administrative team during the clinical protocol submission process.
  • Serve as key point of contact for correlative/lab protocols and sample collections on those protocols.
  • Monitor all aspects of clinical and correlative studies, within and between departments.
  • With clinical faculty, assess feasibility of clinical research and correlative protocols and prioritizes protocols for patient accrual.
  • Manage large-scale and multi-site research activities including implementation of correlative projects and sample collection and tracking.
  • Monitor clinical and correlative protocols and report to faculty on the activation and status of these protocols.
  • Coordinates and prepares meeting agendas and milestone achievement for programmatic meetings.


Head & Neck Research - Scientific Oversight
  • Contribute to writing protocols, grants and manuscripts. Maintains familiarity with institutional processes and requirements. Provides ongoing information concerning changes in federal policy, institutional and divisional initiatives, etc., to relevant program staff and investigators.
  • Develop integrated research grant documents for single and multi-investigator grant applications.
  • Work with the Faculty Program Director to develop grant submission strategies. Responsible for the oversight and management of all programmatic grant applications and submissions to include facilitating the planning and collaboration for the department internally and externally.
  • Manage the grant and administrative program staff. Recruits, hires and trains staff. Conducts performance evaluations, coaching and counseling as appropriate. Mentors the program team and faculty on all aspects of grant management.
  • Provide support to all faculty and staff with regard to grant submissions and translational research efforts; advises faculty on federal guidelines related to the response of specific Program Announcements and Requests for Applications. Serves as a resource for faculty and staff related to electronic research applications and issues related to these applications, as well as, changes in the application submission process. Ensures compliance with all general, governmental, and NCI regulations and requirements.
  • Write and prepare publications and reviews analyses and interpretation of data.
  • Manage research agreements between MD Anderson and other institutions.


Head & Neck Research - Financial Oversight
  • Ensure that clinical and non-clinical projects have appropriate resources.
  • Work with the post-award team to monitor the research budget and justification of expenditures in conjunction with the designated Principal Investigator(s).
  • Work with the pre-award team to develop and review budgets for large-scale grants; assist faculty with development of budgets to include drafting budget justifications,
  • Develop novel strategies to support grant research needs. Develop an operating plan for grant submissions and monitors progress throughout the year. Ensure that strategic and tactical plans for ongoing research and grant activities are developed and executed effectively and efficiently.
  • Develop, implement and manage effective administrative policies and procedures to ensure operational and quality outcomes for grant funded activities.
  • Review and reconcile designated large-scale, multi-project grants and research program grants, as identified by the Head and Neck Faculty Program Director, to verify accuracy, resolve errors, and ensure adherence with institution, state, local, and federal regulations.
  • Report issues/concerns to Head and Neck Program Director/Department Chairman and Department Administrator.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field. Six years of administrative experience in a research or academic setting to include four years of grant management and two years of supervisory/management experience in a research, health care or related environment. Preferred Degree: Master's or PhD. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
