Position Summary

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Analysts work at the intersection of data analysis, programming, and cartography. Their primary duties include cleaning and preparing spatial data, analyzing spatial data through mapping software, and designing digital maps with geographic data and various other data sets. GIS Analysts are responsible for discovering patterns and trends through spatial mapping and spatial statistical analysis, developing mapping applications and tools, and managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types, among other duties.

GIS Analysts will need to explain geographic trends and findings from their analyses to researchers and team members, requiring excellent written and verbal communication.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Collecting, cleaning, and organizing spatial data.
  • Produce reports including white papers and publications on geographic data utilizing data visualizations.
  • Analyzing spatial data using mapping software and spatial statistical techniques, discovering trends and patterns.
  • Designing digital maps with geographic data and other data sources, publishing maps online with interactive capacity.
  • Producing maps showing the spatial distribution of various kinds of data including point, line, polygon, and raster data.
  • Managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types.
  • Programming in spatial languages like python to automate analysis, spatial database querying in SQL or other database languages, and spatial statistical coding in R or other statistical software.
  • Develop metadata documents for spatial data documentation.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science (GIS) or Geography and/or 3 years equivalent experience working with geospatial data, software, and programming languages.
  • Experience with mapping tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS (3 years).
  • Experience with GPS devices and resulting data (1 year).
  • Development of own code in spatial programming language (1 year).
  • Development and management of spatial data library (2 years).
  • Proficiency with spatial programming and database languages including SQL, R and Python.
  • Proficiency with front end design languages such as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.
  • Outstanding quantitative skill set including ability to clean and manipulate data, quality control, basic statistical knowledge, and spatial statistical knowledge.
  • Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills.
  • Analytical mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Required Certifications/Licensure:
  • GIS Certificate or equivalent coursework

Preferred education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Master's degree in Geographic Information Science (GIS)
  • Experience working in a research or public health setting.
  • Experience working with body-worn sensors such as heart rate monitors, accelerometers, or fitness trackers.
  • Experience producing publishable maps, data visuals, and technical reports of spatial data processes.
  • Knowledge of spatial statistical methods.
  • Experience in online map and data publishing.

Additional Information:
