(Senior Investigator - Research) 


The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Senior Investigator (Research) who will serve as Chief of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics (LNG), in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), in Bethesda, Maryland.

The LNG, which is comprised of four (4) Sections, 2 Units, and a Computational Biology Core, is a highly collaborative research group that investigates the basis of neurodegenerative diseases using genetics, genomics, cell biology, disease modeling, and computational approaches.  LNG provides leadership in defining and understanding the genetic basis of neurological diseases.  The Laboratory has active research programs focused on gene discovery in Parkinson’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, and related neurodegenerative disorders, in addition to substantial research programs aimed at using state of the art molecular biology and systems neuroscience to understand neurodegenerative disease mechanisms and pathophysiology.  The mission also highlights mentoring of the next generation of leaders in the field of neurogenetics.    

The tenure-eligible position requires a Ph.D. or M.D. (or M.D., Ph.D.) or equivalent doctoral degree in Medicine, Neuroscience, Neurogenetics, or related fields.  It is preferred that applicants have long- term research focus and experience in aging or age-related diseases, with particular focus on the molecular and genetic basis of neurodegenerative diseases.  An ideal candidate would have expertise working with genetics, genomics, cell biology, animal modeling, and human data.  An ideal candidate would also have a strong track record in developing translational research from the findings of basic research studies, and in developing testable hypotheses about disease mechanisms and the potential of such mechanisms for disease modulation.  Applicants should have a strong record of productive research in the aforementioned areas and an outstanding publication record, including articles in the fields relevant to this position.

The preferred applicant should have the ability to implement and collaborate in multidisciplinary research and should provide evidence of having the ability to collaborate across and between institutions.  In addition, experience in the management of personnel and complex budgets is desired.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments.  A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available.  NIA may be able to pay relocation expenses.  All employees of the Federal Government are subject to the conflict-of-interest statutes and regulations, including the Standards of Ethical Conduct.
