The Rockefeller University (Rockefeller) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies and Vice President for Educational Affairs.

The world’s leading biomedical research university, Rockefeller draws top scientists and graduate students from around the world in pursuit of one mission: to conduct science for the benefit of humanity. Located in New York City, Rockefeller is organized around 70 individual faculty members, each of whom runs their own independent laboratory and reports directly to the President. The University has a lean administration with minimal bureaucracy to ensure a nimble environment allowing scientists to pursue their most innovative ideas. There are no formal departments, and Rockefeller scientists focus on diverse facets of biomedical research, including biochemistry and biophysics, cell biology, genetics, cancer biology, immunology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and computational biology.

Rockefeller scientists are remarkably productive and empowered to perform at their best. The University has an unparalleled concentration of researchers and trainees recognized with top awards, including the world’s most prestigious biosciences prizes:  26 Nobel Prizes (6 awarded in the last 21 years), 24 Lasker Awards, 20 National Medals of Science, 19 Gairdner Awards, 5 Breakthrough Prizes, and 4 MacArthur Fellowships. There are 39 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 17 members of the National Academy of Medicine, 15 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators, and 7 fellows of The Royal Society.

Rockefeller’s beautifully landscaped 16-acre campus on the East River in Manhattan consists of nine research buildings containing more than 481,000 square feet of lab space, alongside administrative and residential buildings. The University is home to 235 graduate students, 325 postdocs, and 1,325 staff. With a research budget of $228 million, an operating budget of $400 million, and an endowment of $2.7 billion, the University fully pays for all graduate students.

Reporting to University President Richard Lifton, the Dean of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies & Vice President for Educational Affairs will be a visionary leader who will work collaboratively with senior leadership, Rockefeller’s dedicated and prestigious faculty members, the Chief Diversity Officer, and members of the campus at all levels to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary, and innovative academic and research activities. As a VP, the Dean is a member of the University’s Executive Officers leadership team, comprising a total of nine VPs and chaired by President Lifton. The Dean & VP will be passionate and broadly knowledgeable about science, as well as innovative and forward thinking about graduate education. In addition, the Dean & VP must care deeply about students and postdocs and demonstrate a strong record of effective mentoring/advising.

The Dean & VP will oversee a $13.7M operating budget and will lead a team of six experienced and passionate individuals. The Dean & VP will steer the strategic direction of the Dean's Office, the David Rockefeller Graduate Program in Bioscience, the Chemers Neustein Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), RockEDU Science Outreach Program, the Office of Professional Development, and the KL2 Clinical Scholars Master's Degree Program.  Essential responsibilities include oversight of graduate program admissions and recruitment, curriculum development, and student and postdoc advising. The successful candidate will be expected to develop, implement, evaluate, and modify activities to strengthen graduate and postdoctoral training.
