Postdoctoral or staff position available immediately in the Merritt Lab for studies of the human oral microbiome
The oral microbiome is an exceptional model system to investigate the complex interplay between the microbiome and host. Our laboratory employs a mixture of cellular/molecular microbiology and biochemistry approaches to reveal the mechanisms supporting microbiome symbiosis and dysbiosis in the oral cavity. Projects in the lab involve both bacterial genetics and microbiome-host interaction studies. Our bacterial genetics research utilizes a variety of oral microbes to reveal critical gene regulatory mechanisms involved in oral health and disease. As part of these studies, our group has been quite successful at creating genetic systems for understudied microbiome species that we routinely isolate directly from clinical specimens. A second research emphasis in the lab uses mixed species polymicrobial infections to understand the mechanisms of polymicrobial synergy in dysbiotic diseases of the human mucosae. Current projects in the lab include: 1) characterize pleiotropic, prokaryotic post-transcriptional gene regulatory mechanisms, especially those targeting mRNA stability or translation, 2) characterize bacterial genetic mechanisms targeting host signaling pathways, and 3) determine the mechanistic basis for polymicrobial synergy and immunopathology in mixed species infection models.
Candidates should be highly self-motivated and possess a strong background in microbial genetics, cellular/molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related field.
Typical duties of this position include:
genetic mutation construction, gene expression analysis, protein expression/purification, EMSA, Co-IP, northern blotting, western blotting, FACS analysis, and fluorescence microscopy.
Position Conditions/Qualifications:
Required
- Doctoral degree in a related field of science
- Evidence of extensive experience with current genetic, cellular/molecular biology, and/or biochemistry techniques
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred
- Bacteriology and/or immunology experience
- Experience working with RNA
- Protein purification
- Strong background in prokaryotic/eukaryotic gene regulation and/or host signal transduction mechanisms
