Job Details
Staff Scientist
SUMMARY
Function
Designs, develops and implements experiments and projects.
Scope
Impacts cancer research efforts throughout the institution.
Essential Job Functions
Responsibilities of the successful applicant would include the following:
1. Perform multi-omic analyses of primary samples from patients with multiple myeloma and related plasma cell dyscrasias to broaden our understanding of disease biology and mechanisms of resistance to novel therapeutics. These approaches may include single cell RNA-sequencing, CITE-seq, single-cell proteomics (such as CyTOF), targeted DNA analysis of single cells (e.g. Mission Bio, scATAC-seq (e.g. 10x Genomics), and/or others). Where feasible, the project may utilize or build upon existing infrastructure available within the department, division and/or institution.
2. Identify novel genes and pathways from the above datasets that appear to impact on disease pathobiology and perform studies to validate their roles and mechanism(s) of action, including by inducibly over-expressing or suppressing their expression in cell line and primary cell models.
3. Pursue pre-clinical in vitro and in vivo studies to understand the mechanisms of action of novel drugs and pertinent mechanisms of resistance which will in part be correlated to the findings from studies described in part 1, above. These approaches may include genome-wide CRISPR/Cas-9 screens, generation of resistant in vitro and in vivo models, and also use of single cell assays as detailed in #1.
4. Mentor, supervise, and advise, as appropriate, more junior members of the laboratory team in a collaborative and constructive fashion to improve the scientific quality and rigor of other ongoing projects.
5. Participate in the presentation of data arising from these studies in the context of regular internal and external meetings with key stakeholders.
6. Leverage these data to contribute to the preparation of progress reports, meeting abstracts and peer-reviewed manuscripts, as well as applications for both internal and external peer-reviewed funding.
Marginal Job Functions
Other duties as assigned.
PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree. Five years of experience in experimental or scientific work. It is the policy of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to provide equal employment opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, age, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, disability, protected veteran status, genetic information, or any other basis protected by institutional policy or by federal, state or local laws unless such distinction is required by law. http://www.mdanderson.org/about-us/legal-and-policy/legal-statements/eeo-affirmative-action.html
