The Department of Science and Mathematics at Northern State University seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology to begin January 2022.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field is preferred; however, ABD candidates with a completion date no later than December 2021 will also be considered. Experience and interest in the health sciences is also preferred. Candidates must possess a strong commitment to undergraduate education and demonstrate the ability to teach a variety of courses.  Furthermore, interest in teaching non-majors Biology is required.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be expected to teach Physiology and an introductory Biology course for non-majors.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching other health related courses such as Genetics and/or Developmental Biology.  Additional courses in the candidate’s area of expertise may be added to the rotation depending on departmental needs.  The applicant will be expected to bring a research program that can be easily adapted to undergraduate students, and be willing to participate in service activities as requested.

The Jewett Regional Science Education Center houses the science faculty and laboratory facilities. Completed in 2019, this advanced facility combines classrooms, labs, and over 3200 sq ft of dedicated research space. Highlights include a climate-controlled cadaver lab, microscopy suite, cell culture suite, greenhouse, and a dedicated instrumental analysis lab. The department is equipped with standard equipment for experimentation in genetics, cell and molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics, physics, GIS and physical geography.  Notable acquisitions in biology include a confocal fluorescence microscope, a scanning electron microscope, an NMR spectrometer, a qPCR thermal cycler, and a multi-mode microplate reader. Chemistry is well-equipped with modern instrumentation for spectroscopy (ICP, MP-AES, NMR, UV-VIS, FTIR), diffraction (powder XRD), and chromatography (GC & HPLC), while physics has a hyperspectral imaging system.
