Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education

The University of Washington (UW) invites applications for the position of Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education (VD-RGE) at the UW School of Medicine (SoM). The VD-RGE is an integral member of the senior management team of the UW SoM and provides strategic oversight and central support for the SoM’s research and graduate education programs. The VD-RGE works to create and sustain a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters excellence in graduate training and promotes outstanding basic, translational and clinical research. The VD-RGE also coordinates with UW Medicine and the SoM to ensure that research and graduate education programs comply with federal and state laws and University of Washington and UW Medicine policies, procedures, and regulations.

The UW SoM has more than 3,000 faculty members and has one of the largest and most comprehensive biomedical research programs in the world. The SoM’s academic departments and multidisciplinary research centers and institutes support cutting-edge research programs. Outstanding graduate education programs are sponsored by the SoM’s basic science departments and also by several interdisciplinary PhD programs. In addition, the SoM leads an outstanding Medical Scientist Training Program for MD/PhD training and provides leadership for the University of Washington’s Institute for Translational Health Sciences.

The VD-RGE works closely with other vice deans in the SoM and with senior leadership of UW Medicine, including UW Medicine’s chief medical officer and chief business officer. This position reports to the CEO, UW Medicine/Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the University of Washington School of Medicine. The VD-RGE will have a faculty appointment appropriate for background and experience.

Qualifications

Either a PhD degree in a field of biomedical science or an MD degree including a significant research training component is required. Minimum of 10 years of senior-level faculty and/or executive experience preferably in an academic medical center or public university setting. In addition, the VD-RGE must have 15 years of direct experience as a research scientist in an academic medical center and have 15 years of experience with (PhD) graduate and postgraduate education and training.
