Pfizer currently has an open Associate Scientist position for a protein biochemist in the Structural and Molecular Sciences (SMS) department in Groton, CT. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong expertise in recombinant protein expression, purification and characterization and the desire to pursue challenging biomolecular targets for drug discovery. We are an integrated and highly collaborative team of colleagues with technical expertise in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology. We have a strong track record of enabling hit-to-lead progression for small molecule modulators of both soluble and integral membrane proteins using integrated biophysical and structural approaches. We actively collaborate with Pfizer drug discovery teams across multiple therapeutic areas including Immunology & Inflammation, Internal Medicine, Vaccines, and Rare Diseases, with a mission to advance drug and vaccine discovery efforts by providing comprehensive molecular and structural insights into therapeutic targets, lead molecules, and protein-ligand interactions.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Purify functional proteins or protein complexes for biochemistry, biophysics, and structure determination.
  • Characterize proteins by analytical and biophysical methods including western blot, aSEC, DLS, TSA to monitor stability, conformation, and oligomerization.
  • Apply various biophysical approaches (including SPR, ITC) to enable hit identification, validation, target engagement, and Mechanism-of-Action studies.
  • Be part of multi-disciplinary teams to support discovery projects across diverse disease areas.
  • Effective oral and written communication of experimental work and analysis.
  • Perform timely notebook entries and review for completed experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS with 2-3 years of relevant laboratory experience required.
  • Proficient in the purification of recombinant proteins by affinity, IEX and SEC using FPLC (AKTA) systems.
  • Experience with the expression of recombinant proteins using bacterial and eukaryotic (insect, mammalian) expression systems.
  • Previous experience with biophysical assay formats and investigation of target-ligand interactions (ex: binding affinity) is a plus.
  • Ability to multi-task to balance parallel activities.
  • Ability to troubleshoot scientific and technical challenges and contribute to their resolution.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing, lifting, bending, and walking. Ability to perform practical laboratory bench work and work on a computer (while standing or sitting). Ability to perform mathematical calculations and interpret data.
