We are seeking a Technician in the Flexible API Supply Technology (FAST) Continuous API Development group as a laboratory based colleague in Groton CT.

CRD, as part of Worldwide R&D in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is responsible for the development of process technology for the production of API. CRD scientists engage in all facets of development from small scale synthesis in support of medicinal chemistry programs, to the development of the commercial synthetic route. CRD scientists partner with manufacturing specialists for API synthesis in kilo-lab and pilot plant facilities, as well as provide support for technology transfer to Pfizer manufacturing sites and third party facilities.

The successful candidate will join the FAST team as a laboratory based experimentalist and lab support specialist. They will provide lab based and organizational support necessary to assist the team in the development of continuous API platforms, workflows and processes. We anticipate the successful candidate will become a key lab steward for the group.


This role's day to day functions can be divided into administrative and lab-based responsibilities. Additional administrative and lab-based tasks for this role will be evaluated on a rolling basis:

  • Maintain desired stocking levels for lab consumables: vials, pipettes, bottles, etc.
  • Maintain desired stocking levels for solvent in the lab; keep track of peroxide forming solvents and discard prior to expiration date and refilling mobile phase bottles for LC systems.
  • Maintain desired stocking levels for lab glassware in the lab
  • Manage waste in the lab
    • Prepare solvent waste to be sent out daily
  • Setup new waste drums and sharps waste containers as needed
  • Unload clean glassware as it is returned from glass washing; inspect glassware for any cracks or chips while unloading and replace any broken items
  • Maintain in-lab analytical equipment in optimal working order with maintenance, cleaning, and routine calibration: UPLC, EasySamplers, etc.
  • Primary owner for initiating and tracking standing POs with frequently used vendors for parts and fittings.
  • Maintain Parts lists and desired stocking levels for parts and fittings from multiple vendors.
  • Develop organizational strategies for work flows and equipment arrangements
    • Design, specify and assemble support racks (80/20 custom aluminum frames), manifolds, etc. for pumps, motors, controllers, nitrogen/air/vacuum/air utilities and commonly used tubing for optimal space utilization, streamlining workflows and improving/maintaining accessibility in lab.
    • Communication and power cable management
  • Order new equipment when necessary
    • E.g. pumps, balances, stir-plates, syringes, etc.
  • Organize samples for shipment to other sites, to be sent to neat stores, or for storage in the vivarium level storeroom
  • Maintain capital equipment lists for lab team

  • Perform and record Pump calibrations for the range of pumps available in FAST lab.
  • Record data in appropriate accessible location - electronic lab notebooks (eLN), Excel spreadsheets, FAST team share drive.
  • Verify pump performance for various as needed reactor system and other unit operation set ups.
  • Assembly or construction of unit operations with specified designs, e.g. assembling a tube-in-tube heat exchanger based on provided specifications and materials.
  • Obtain materials and assemble/install vendor supplied and/or custom designed reactor systems (plug flow reactors, CSTRs and batch reactor systems) - in glass, metal, or polymer materials as needed.
  • Obtain materials and assemble/install vendor supplied and/or custom designed workup platform systems (distillation, extraction, crystallization, filtration, drying) - in glass, metal, or polymer materials as needed.
  • Assist with set up and testing of automation and communication functionality with automation colleagues and FAST engineers (including wiring and data cable management)
  • Perform equipment PMs and testing as needed to ensure all FAST equipment "ready to go" as needed for platform and portfolio work.
  • Specify and assist in assembly of appropriate table and cart mounting options for mobile FAST lab kits such as CSTR and PFR reactor systems.
  • Setup and cleaning of automated lab reactor systems and support equipment to facilitate experimental work
  • Assist in execution of large blocks of experiments (e.g., DoE studies) by subdividing solids, preparing stock solutions, delivering samples for analytical testing, organization of solid and ML samples, and storage of retain samples until project completion.
  • Occasional need for overnight monitoring and/or execution coverage for long duration experiments including feed makeups, sampling, etc.
  • Setup gas cylinders as needed for experiments; Coordinate with AirGas for ordering and return of gas cylinders as needed.
  • Perform monthly check of fill volume in chiller systems and add coolant as needed.

  • Role requires the ability to lift approximately 20 pounds and work with mechanical equipment (pumps, reactors, heat exchangers, etc.).
  • The position requires an ability to work in a laboratory environment performing experiments in a laboratory fume hood, and performing general mathematical calculations.
  • Must be able to wear PPE (lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, face shield, etc.)

  • A standard day shift operation totaling approximately 40 hours per week is expected for this role, although some second shift or weekend coverage may be required at times as warranted by business need.
