The HIV Community Specialist (HIVCS) is a regional lead on Gilead Sciences Canada's HIV community-related linkage to care initiatives to support UNAIDS targets of 95-95-95 in Canada.. The HIVCS identifies partnership opportunities, works closely with internal and external cross-functional teams, executes the regional POA and develops project plans to execute tactics that will increase linkage to care in underserved HIV patient populations.

To accomplish this, they will focus on the timely delivery of HIV disease awareness information and education on best practices for engaging patients to care. The target audience focuses on stakeholders and patients with inherent barriers to care (stigma-related barriers, low literacy, language barriers, living in rural or underserved urban areas, and a general lack of knowledge about HIV).

The HIVCS is responsible for establishing strong working relationships with organizations serving these communities, such AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs), other community-based organizations including addiction support and harm reduction settings, addiction treatment clinics, community healthcare practices delivering care populations affected by HIV. The HIVCS may also drive local strategies to address underserved First Nations communities.

The successful HIVCS will possess the business acumen and professionalism required to gain the respect of multiple stakeholders across community, professional organizations and healthcare professionals. The HIVCS should have the ability to synthesize complex clinical concepts to appropriate literacy and conceptual levels for diverse audiences. Candidates must possess strong presentation and communications skills and a proven record of interacting with community and public health stakeholders, healthcare professionals and other health care organizations. Candidates must have experience or the necessary competencies to present approved educational materials directly to community support personnel from diverse and varied backgrounds.

This is a field-based position. The HIVCS reports to the Associate Director, HIV Community Engagement. This position requires travel, which will be dependent on the geography covered. Target audience will include calling on ASOs, other community partners, nurse practitioners/physician assistants, MDs, treatment coordinators, social workers, case managers, treatment educators, outreach workers.

Duties will include but not limited to:
  • As appropriate, the HIVCS may serve to facilitate collaboration across audiences such as institutions and professional organizations to improve access to education, care and treatment for HIV.
  • Works, within assigned geography, with diverse stakeholder groups to identify appropriate opportunities
  • Prepares strategies to customize direction to the needs of specific stakeholders/regions. Provides timely and thoughtful analysis and feedback on local developments with a wide variety of internal stakeholders.
  • Prioritizes appropriate projects and implements ambitious plans for change that are aligned to the HIV Community Engagement POA
  • Provides appropriate communication and teamwork to ensure the Gilead Sciences Canada's HIV team collectively implements the plan to achieve its objectives.
  • Develops key strategies to engage stakeholders with appropriate clinical and community solutions. Leads initiatives within the context of assigned projects.
  • May represent company at professional events and share Gilead Sciences' commitment to HIV at such events.
  • Cooperates with Medical Affairs, Public Affairs and other internal Gilead Sciences Canada team members on various cross-functional projects.
  • Assists in the identification and resolution of issues and opportunities and communicates proactively to marketing management.
  • Completes necessary administrative tasks in a timely manner, e.g., updating any database, recording expenses and budget management.
  • Responsible for the collecting and reporting of complaints/Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) to Pharmacovigilance and Epidemiology (PVE) or the local Pharmacovigilance Responsible Person (PRP), immediately, i.e., within 24 hours, when in the receipt of complaints/ADRs.
  • Operates in compliance with Gilead Sciences Canada's commercial compliance policy, and all applicable federal and provincial laws and guidance relating to product promotion, information dissemination, and interactions with healthcare professionals.


Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • Experience must include working with the HIV community and / or public health experience.
  • Demonstrated success in coalition building and cross-functional leadership
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills and ability to effectively and efficiently communicate to a variety of groups and audiences
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to influence and mobilize diverse groups
  • High sense of urgency and strong work-ethic
  • Proven track record of effectively managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Demonstrated project management skills including analytical assessment, timeline and budget management, planning and prioritization


Education & Experience
  • BA or BS degree, preferably in the sciences, public health, public health policy or business-related disciplines or a nursing qualification
