This position will reside within the Global Microscopic Imaging (GMI) Group of Global Pathology & Investigative Toxicology (GPIT) in Drug Safety R&D. We are seeking a motivated Scientist to support Veterinary Pathologists as they collaborate with Research Unit (RU) scientists and Comparative Medicine (CM) personnel to design, schedule and manage studies. Responsibilities will also include training RU and CM colleagues in necropsy technique, collecting, processing and shipping specimens and glass slides, processing chain of custody documents, performing quality control (QC) of pathology data, specimens and reports, and scanning glass slides and conducting digital image analysis (DIA). The ideal candidate will be able to work independently or with GPIT team members, while having strong communication skills to foster effective collaborations with Pathologists, RU scientists and CM colleagues on project teams.

  • Perform all regulatory responsibilities in compliance with applicable regulatory standards including Good Laboratory Practices and animal welfare regulations
  • Communicate with RU scientists to schedule exploratory, regulatory and investigative studies in coordination with Pathologists and Global Pathology Operations Lead
  • Coordinate the shipment of glass microscope slides, maintaining appropriate chain of custody documentation
  • Train and monitor colleagues in necropsy technique and in the collection and processing of tissues for analysis
  • Perform QC of pathology data, specimens and reports independently
  • Prepare tissue specimens for shipping
  • Scan microscope slides into a virtual image archive in preparation for DIA
  • Run established DIA algorithms to quantify target expression in support of investigative studies

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Biotechnology or related field with +5 years relevant necropsy and/or histology experience including histotechnical (histology, IHC, ISH assays) or image analysis experience
    Master's degree with +3 years of relevant necropsy and/or histology experience
    PhD in Biomedical Sciences or Technology with +1 year relevant histotechnical or image analysis experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to effectively interact, contribute, and communicate with the team

  • Experience with routine histotechnical procedures and processes, including special histochemical stains, IHC, ISH and immunofluorescence (IF) methods
  • Experience with cryosectioning and preparing frozen specimens for cryosectioning
  • Experience as a Lab Manager or previous responsibilities as a lab administrator
  • Familiarity with chain of custody procedures and documentation
  • Experience with whole slide scanning process and instruments (Leica AT2)
  • Working knowledge of digital image analysis methods and systems, with emphasis on familiarity with Visiopharm and Indica Labs HALO image analysis software programs.

  • Occasional travel to the Groton, CT site for training and interactions with laboratory personnel
