Role Summary

This position will serve a dual role as a scientist supporting the API plant and as a plant professional in the fermentation/isolation pilot plant. As a scientist, the incumbent is accountable for developing and delivering chemical engineering process technology in support of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing at Pfizer's Kalamazoo (Michigan) plant. As a pilot plant professional, this position will be responsible for providing weekly support to the fermentation and separations pilot plant, including maintenance of equipment/processes, creation of new batch records/SOPs/training documents, implementation of new technology, and completion of safety-focused projects.

This position will focus on fermentation and downstream processing, including process troubleshooting, support, and improvement. The incumbent will provide technical support for manufacturing processes in production, will perform laboratory studies, and will support process improvements into the facility. As the incumbent gains experience with such activities, the expectation is that the role as a pilot plant professional will diminish.

Role Responsibilities

Work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-oriented, laboratory environment to deliver process technology in support of commercial fermentation and downstream operations.

Work closely with the team leader, operators, and scientists to ensure that the pilot plant is running safely and effectively, providing the technical support necessary to meet customer goals in a timely manner.

Improve and implement robust commercial processes to make API and intermediates; provide technical support to evaluate new processes or technology in the pilot plant as required.

Work under general supervision, recommend actions, participate in setting objectives for both pilot plant and research projects, and independently determine and develop experimental programs.

Maintain laboratory/pilot plant area and equipment in a clean, safe, functional order.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS/MS degree in Chemical Engineering or related field with a minimum of two years of laboratory/manufacturing experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous experience in a research laboratory setting and/or a strong background of traditional bioprocessing (fermentation, bioconversion, downstream purification, etc.).

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

This position involves working in a laboratory/production environment, which may include standing for long periods of time and working with a variety of chemical/biological materials. A strong foundation in chemical engineering unit operations is essential for this job.

The position requires the ability to perform mathematical calculations, including complex data analysis, and to navigate the Quality system(s) utilized at the site.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

The position may require colleagues to work off-hours, weekends, and/or holidays as needed to meet business or customer needs.
