The Medicine Design group plays a vital role in this mission through the discovery of Pfizer's small molecule and synthetically-derived drugs. We are seeking a leader in Medicinal Chemistry to join our world-class Medicine Design team in Cambridge MA to build upon our rich history of innovation in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Design and deliver Pfizer's drugs of the future.

What You Will Achieve

As the Head of Design Inflammation and Immunology Medicine, Medicinal Chemistry, you will provide leadership and vision for the creation of cutting-edge medicinal chemistry and drug discovery strategies. You are a recognized scientific and people leader in medicinal chemistry with a track record of project delivery into clinical trials, with a strong history developing talent and partnering across departments. This colleague will be accountable for driving excellence in medicinal chemistry, drug design and drug discovery across their RU-based medicinal chemistry group ensuring success in the following areas:
  • Get the best molecule
  • Ensure competitiveness of medicinal chemistry portfolio
  • Expand druggable target capabilities
  • Achieve >80% survival of selected compounds to FIH


How You Will Achieve It
  • Delivers molecules that safely and effectively modify target function in patients that address unmet medical needs and differentiate from molecular therapies that are standard of care in the disease areas of relevance and focus for the relevant RU
  • In partnership with RU leaders is responsible for the development and execution of a portfolio from idea to the clinic. Influences and partners effectively with RU leadership.
  • Designs and implements chemistry and chemical biology strategies that aid the evolution and execution of medically and commercially differentiated portfolios.
  • Leverages the strengths of the Medicine Design model and structure to build a sustainable industry leading organization
  • Is a key member of the RU Chemistry leadership team; contributes to the development and execution of the unit's portfolio, provides scientific and inspirational leadership to the members of RU chemistry group and across Medicine Design, promotes a culture of innovation. Drives the team and the department to set a standard of excellence for productivity, efficiency and delivery.
  • With the Synthesis Head drives a culture of one chemistry team/department to efficiently deliver the portfolio
  • Identifies, and executes to clear and successful outcomes, new opportunities for strategic collaborations (both external to the company and within Pfizer) to enable RU portfolio delivery and/or drive Medicine Design strategy
  • Contributes and regularly leads the review of external assets for purposes of ascertaining in-license opportunities or competing compounds to drive strategic decision making
  • Aligns and prioritizes medicinal chemistry resources to deliver RU goals from idea to POC
  • Accountable for building and evolving skills and resources to deliver RU chemistry plan
  • Attracts, retains and develops talented scientists to underpin organizational capability. Delivers the next generation of Senior Scientific Leaders in the Medicinal Design organization
  • Influences the external environment through thought leadership and visible and active engagement with key opinion leaders, funding bodies, professional societies, and academic institutions to align research to areas of mutual interest and produce a talent pipeline with appropriate skills to meet organizational needs.


Qualifications
  • PhD or advanced degree and 8+ years of experience preferred
  • BA or MA degree in a relevant scientific discipline and equivalent experience will also be considered
  • Strong working knowledge and track record of delivery in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery including delivery of candidates to Ph2 or beyond
  • Proven track record in establishment of project portfolios from idea-to-candidate
  • Leadership of a substantial chemistry group or project with a record of excellent team participation
  • Successful introduction and application of novel technologies to improve productivity in medicinal chemistry
  • Track record of excellence in talent development, and excellence in performance management practices
  • Excellence in delivering clear, strong IP strategies across a portfolio of projects
  • Strong working knowledge of all key Research and Development Lines.
  • Extensive experience in leading change and dealing with uncertainty.
  • Strong track record of publications and presentations and viewed as a scientific leader in the field.
