Post Doc Fellow-Studying mechanisms of skeletal development, metabolism & repair- Dr.Fanxin Long

Job Summary

A postdoctoral position is available for studying mechanisms of skeletal development, metabolism and repair at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  The lab seeks to elucidate the molecular characteristics and fate determination of mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells in bone, and to understand the role of cellular and systemic metabolism in skeletal health and diseases.  The experimental techniques include single cell RNA sequencing, mouse genetics and metabolic tracing with mass spectrometry.  The researcher will have access to first-rate core facilities both at CHOP and University of Pennsylvania, and enjoy interactions with experts in the fields of skeletal biology and metabolism at both institutions.  An ideal candidate should have PhD or equivalent research experience in cell, molecular or developmental biology with a strong motivation for musculoskeletal research.  

Since the early days of his scientific training, Dr. Long has been interested in understanding how the mammalian skeleton is formed and maintained in a functional state throughout life. Many of his studies have revolved around key developmental pathways such as Hedgehog, Wnt and Notch signaling in bone development and homeostasis. Through mouse genetic studies, his group has defined specific functions of the developmental signals in bone cell differentiation. Their biochemical studies have led to the discovery that developmental signals reprogram cellular metabolism to change cell fate. The lab currently tests the hypothesis that dysregulation of glucose metabolism is a root cause for skeletal disorders associated with diabetes and aging.

Job Responsibilities

1. Conduct independent scholarly research and develop new methods and protocols
2. Participate in project planning, recording and evaluation of data
3. Acquire technical, lab management and grant writing skills
4. Participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentation at national meetings
5. Supervise junior lab members
6. Assist with other research projects

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

Required Education and Experience

• A terminal degree PhD, MD, DVM, etc.
• According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic
