La Jolla Institute for Immunology

Search for the Chief Financial Officer

La Jolla, California

The La Jolla Institute for Immunology seeks nominations and applications for the role of Chief Financial Officer.

For over three decades, the La Jolla Institute (LJI) has positioned itself at the forefront of scientific discovery in immunology. LJI was established in 1988 by a coalition of leaders from academia and industry. These leaders envisioned a unique and dynamic partnership between basic science and applied research, one that would lead to breakthroughs in the understanding of the immune system and improve global human health through the development of treatments and cures for immune system disorders. The La Jolla Institute remains an independent non-profit research institute true to its founders’ intentions, pursuing a vision of Life Without Disease. LJI’s preeminent faculty generate and disseminate knowledge in the Institute’s core research centers of autoimmune disease, cancer, and infectious disease and vaccine research. These centers address research mandates with wide ranging application to diseases like type one diabetes, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, HIV, Pertussis, COVID-19, Tuberculosis, Parkinson’s, Dengue, Lassa, and Ebola.

The work of the next Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is crucial to advancing the La Jolla Institute’s ambitious vision. Working in partnership with LJI’s incoming President and CEO, Dr. Erica Ollmann Saphire, the CFO will ensure the appropriate financial systems and infrastructure are in place to best support the Institute’s talented faculty and staff. LJI’s success in sponsored research requires experience in administering and managing complex grants, and the CFO will be an effective steward of funds, building trust and accountability both within the Institute and externally with donors and funders. The CFO will have the opportunity to be a strategic partner to leaders across the Institute, collaborating with faculty to resource and support their scientific aspirations and working with the President and CEO to identify additional sources of revenue. In addition, the CFO will build capacity in and support the professional development of the finance department’s dedicated and skilled staff members. This is an opportunity for a creative and rigorous financial leader to work hand-in-hand with the Institute’s leadership team, faculty and staff, and the Board of Directors to help elevate one of the leading immunology research organizations in the world to new levels of success.
