Weill Cornell Medicine

Chair, Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics

Weill Cornell Medicine, the medical school of Cornell University, is searching for the next Chair of the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics. Reporting to the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine, the department chair is a member of the senior research leadership team and works collaboratively with the central administration, fellow chairs, center and institute directors, and faculty members.

Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) is finalizing a realignment of its basic science departments and the newly restructured Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics represents an expansion of the existing Department of Biochemistry with biophysicists and structural biologists from other departments within the college. The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics will utilize cutting-edge technology to support a broad range of foundational and translational research efforts.

The chair will work in collaboration with the Dean of the Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences to lead faculty participation in graduate education programs, particularly in the Molecular Biophysics training program and the Biochemistry & Structural Biology, Molecular Biology and Cell & Developmental Biology graduate programs, which include faculty from WCM as well as the Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute. Weill Cornell Medicine is part of a tri-institutional network with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute and Rockefeller University, which offers joint PhD programs in Computational Biology & Medicine, Chemical Biology, as well as a world renowned MD-PhD program. WCM also has a strong partnership with Cornell University in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and biomedical engineering, and is a member of both the New York Structural Biology Center and the New York Genome Center Consortium.

The successful candidate should have extensive administrative experience in educational and research programs. They will be expected to develop innovative research programs to build and enhance the research mission of the department and of the medical and graduate schools. The chair has administrative, financial, and operational oversight of the department, and is responsible for strategy development and execution of annual departmental goals and objectives; continuous evaluation of the department’s progress in meeting those goals; expansion of research areas in alignment with the WCM strategic plan; and continuous faculty mentoring and development.

The successful candidate will possess a PhD, MD, or related degree(s), with scholarship commensurate of appointment as senior tenure track faculty member of WCM.   They will also be expected to conduct vibrant, externally funded research and should have an international reputation and track record of success in biochemistry, biophysics or structural biology research. They will be an established and visionary foundational scientist with a solid grounding in quantitative biology, who is able to bridge more than one area of research, and able to translate basic discoveries though collaborations between fundamental and translational/health sciences. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research and teaching, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

To apply, submit a letter of interest and comprehensive curriculum vitae. Applicants are encouraged to describe in their letter of interest how their scholarship contributes to building and supporting diverse educational and research communities. Applications submitted by September 15, 2021 will receive first consideration. Questions can be sent to biochemchairsearch@med.cornell.edu.
