Description

The Biology Department at the University of North Dakota seeks a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on an NSF-supported project on the epigenetics of stem-cell differentiation. The appointment will be full-time and benefitted.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work in Dr. Manu’s laboratory (https://manulab.info). Our research is focused on mapping and understanding gene regulatory networks directing the differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells into alternative blood cell lineages. We are a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary team developing novel combinations of empirical and computational approaches for understanding gene regulation. We utilize functional genomics approaches such as RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, Hi-C, including single-cell versions, as well as genome editing and reporter assays to characterize chromatin states and gene expression during differentiation. These empirical techniques are coupled with machine learning and computational modeling techniques to mechanistically link epigenetic states with gene expression. Ongoing projects vary in scope from analyses of the enhancers of individual genes to broader genome-scale studies of networks composed of many genes.

The University of North Dakota has a vibrant and collaborative developmental biology and epigenetics community. Our lab is part of an NIH funded Center for Biomedical Research Excellence focused on the epigenetics of development and disease (https://med.und.edu/epigenetics/) hosted at the University of North Dakota and we collaborate with several labs in the center. The Department of Biology and the epigenetics center feature modern molecular biology, genomics, and computational facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

We seek an independent experimental biologist with a strong interest in developmental/stem-cell biology, gene regulation, and epigenetics and the ability to work collaboratively with other experimentalists and computational scientists. The postdoc will develop and implement projects, utilizing modern genome editing and functional genomics approaches, to investigate the rules by which epigenetic state and transcription factor occupancy determine how complex loci containing multiple enhancers are regulated.  The postdoc will work closely with computational scientists to develop and validate mathematical models and will have the opportunity to learn computational techniques. The postdoc will disseminate the results of their work in the form of manuscripts and conference presentations. Successful candidates will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and interact with the larger developmental biology and epigenetics community at the University of North Dakota.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a developmental, molecular, cellular biology, or related field. Candidates with PhDs in related fields, such as physics, chemistry, or engineering, will also be considered provided they have experience and interest in experimental genetics and molecular biology.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.  This position does not support the sponsorship of visa fees for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developmental genetics, gene regulation, and epigenetics.
  • Experience with genome engineering techniques and/or functional genomics.
  • Experience with bioinformatics/computational biology.
