Chair, Department of Cell Biology

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Dallas, TX

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Cell Biology (the Department). This is an exceptional opportunity for a world class scientist to lead a top basic science department at one of the premier academic medical centers in the nation. Occupying three floors of space in a state-of-the-art building and home to core facilities in electron microscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, and live cell imaging, the Department has room to grow and is well positioned to pursue mutually-beneficial collaborations with departments and centers across the university.

UT Southwestern’s approximately 3,000 faculty include many distinguished scientists; among them are 23 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 16 members of the National Academy of Medicine, 13 Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigators, four HHMI faculty scholars, and one HHMI early-career scientist. Six faculty have been awarded Nobel Prizes since 1985. UT Southwestern trains about 3,600 graduate and medical students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows each year and supports early-career researchers via the institution’s acclaimed Endowed Scholars Program in Medical Science. Funded by a private endowment, the Program has launched the research careers of 112 investigators, many of whom have become leaders in their fields.

Reporting to the Vice Provost and Dean of Basic Research, the Chair of the Department of Cell Biology will lead one of the longest-standing basic science departments at UT Southwestern. Following a line of highly distinguished chairs, the incoming Chair will continue the work of bolstering the Department by recruiting and developing top faculty, ensuring strong administrative structures, pursuing collaborations with UT Southwestern partners, and developing a long-term research strategy. The Chair will be a leading voice on the science of cell biology, elevating the department’s reputation on a national and international level and stimulating creative pursuit of new areas of research within a department with a diverse array of research interests.

The successful candidate will possess stellar academic credentials and an exceptional record of research and publication that merit appointment at the rank of full professor in the Department. They should also possess strong administrative and personnel management skills, the ability to marshal resources toward strategic objectives, and demonstrated success at persuasive engagement.

UT Southwestern has engaged Isaacson Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the search. All inquiries, nominations, referrals, and applications should be submitted in confidence to:
