POSITION DESCRIPTION

RESEARCH POSITIONS AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UCSD –
OCEANS & ATMOSPHERE SECTION

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego invites applications for one or more full-time Researcher positions to be funded by extramural research grants and contracts in any of the research areas listed below. We seek one or more candidates in all areas relevant to the Oceans and Atmosphere Section, broadly including physical oceanography, atmospheric science, climate science, ocean acoustics, and geochemistry, with particular interest in machine learning, coastal ocean-atmosphere interactions, hydrology, and marine robotic sensors.

The Researcher series at SIO parallels the Professor series in terms of research and service, but it carries no teaching requirements. Researchers receive eleven-month appointments with 25% salary support from institutional sources. Researchers are expected to establish an externally funded research program that provides the remainder of their salary support. Researchers at SIO often obtain lecturer appointments in the SIO department and serve as graduate student advisors.

We seek motivated, broad-thinking scientists to develop vigorous research groups and provide intellectual leadership in their fields while complementing existing expertise in the Oceans and Atmosphere Section. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research as well as service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Researcher level, but exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for the Associate Researcher or Full Researcher levels. Relevant research areas include Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Ocean Acoustics, and Geochemistry.

SIO is a world-renowned center of marine research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean, biological and atmospheric sciences. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The positions require a PhD, or equivalent degree, in a relevant field at time of application and candidates should have a competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program consistent with career level.

Relevant research areas include Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Ocean Acoustics, and Geochemistry.
