1. Organizational setting 

The World Maritime University (WMU) is a postgraduate and research university established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Professional Development Courses (PDCs) with the highest standards in maritime and oceans education and training. WMU also has a highly respected research programme supported by specialized research groups across the maritime and ocean fields. 
The Assistant Professor position falls within the Faculty Unit at WMU’s headquarters in Malmö, Sweden. 

2. Main purpose 

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the Vice-President (Academic Affairs), and functionally under the Head of Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration (MSEA). As a faculty member at the World Maritime University, the Assistant Professor is expected to provide teaching/mentoring and research and publication and promote inter-university cooperation in areas related to marine technology. 

The Assistant Professor, Marine Technology, is expected to contribute to the overall efforts of WMU to strengthen the technical component in its academic programmes. This position is therefore open to candidates with a wide range of interest and expertise in technical matters related to shipping and shipboard operations. Areas of focus of potential candidates for this position may include, among others, new maritime trends including automation and digitalization in the maritime field (e.g. e-navigation, MASS, maritime single window) and their implications for the future of work in maritime transport and logistics; risk-based ship design and operations; ship hydrodynamics, underwater radiated noise and vibration. The faculty member must be knowledgeable and supportive of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and understand their relationship with IMO and the University’s mandate and goals. 

The work involves teaching both introductory and advanced courses, mentoring of PhD and M.Sc. students, serving on internal committees and panels, and providing services to WMU, IMO, and the maritime and oceans community, as directed by the University. 

The Assistant Professor will engage in maritime research projects and scholarship leading to the publication of peer-reviewed impact creating articles and scholarly books. The incumbent shall assist in the development and execution of research projects and the presentation of scholarly results. 

As a member of the faculty and professional staff at WMU, the Assistant Professor, Marine Technology, is expected to contribute to WMU, positioning it as a leading academic institution of excellence in the maritime and oceans fields and to contribute to the overall research output in the area of expertise of the Assistant Professor, Marine Technology

3. Working relationships 

Internal contacts – Incumbent liaises and interacts with all faculty members on a regular basis as well as with support staff, as required. 

External contacts – Incumbent liaises with the global maritime, ocean and the marine and industry communities, research organizations, intergovernmental organizations, nongovernmental organizations, as well as scientific journals and publishing entities, as appropriate. 

4. Duties, responsibilities 

Responsibilities 

The Assistant Professor, Marine Technology, is expected, under the supervision of the Vice President (Academic Affairs) to be engaged in: 

• teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching programmes in Malmö, and other locations as needed and assigned; 
• coordinating and participating in student field studies; 
• mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations in areas related to the expertise of the Assistant Professor, Marine Technology; 
• scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.; 
• the development of projects, submission of project proposals, and delivery of such projects; 
• presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings; 
• involvement in distance learning (e-learning) programmes, PDCs, and capacity-building courses as required; 
• service on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties. 

5. Minimum requirements – education, experience and language skills 

Education and Experience 

• PhD in the area of naval architecture/marine engineering and/or marine technology/innovation or a related subject for the position

Experience 
Essential 

• A minimum of three years of experience, after obtaining a PhD, in teaching at the postgraduate level; 
• Familiarity with IMO key instruments related to maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment from ship source pollution; 
• Detailed knowledge of the IMO system and expertise in tasks and duties of IMO member States as required by IMO conventions; 
• A track record in maritime research and scholarly publication in areas related to the position; 
• Experience in leading in research project management in relation to the position and in capacity building programs for developing countries. 

Desirable 

• Professional experience in working within or with maritime administrations; 
• Experience with the United Nations system; 
• Experience in organizing conferences and seminars and fund-raising; 
• Advanced knowledge of maritime simulations; 
• Sea-going and/or industry experiences are highly appreciated. 

Languages 

Essential 
Fluency in spoken and written English. 

Desirable 
Knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage. 

6. Knowledge and skills

• Effective organizational skills to manage time and priorities in teaching and administrative duties as appropriate; 
• Ability to act as point of contact for problems/enquiries from students in the areas of expertise of the Assistant Professor, Marine Technology; 
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and nondiscriminatory behaviour and attitudes; 
• Ability to deal with administrative matters, as appropriate, according to the rank of an Assistant Professor at WMU.
