The Opportunity

To sustain and grow the Research School of Biology’s program of research and teaching, we are seeking to appoint up to three new continuing faculty members at Academic Levels B, C or D (equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professor).

  • To address goals for gender equity, two positions are identified positions for applicants who identify as women.
    • Position one – photosynthetic biology,
    • Position two – host-microbe biology or membrane biology.
  • The third position is open to all applicants and will be appointed in any area consistent with RSB research and teaching priorities.
  • Applicants for all three positions should have received their PhDs within the last 15 years, allowing for career interruptions.

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate that

  • They are, or have the potential to become, world-class researchers in their respective fields, with strong, independent research programs funded by external grants.
  • Their research and teaching reflects the latest theoretical, quantitative and experimental advances in their field, with a clear commitment to teaching excellence.
  • They are collaborative and collegial, and accessible to colleagues, research students and undergraduates.
  • They have a demonstrated high-level understanding of the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity and access, and a commitment to the application of these principles in a University context.

The School

The ANU Research School of Biology is home to 50 continuing academic staff and a large number of postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers from around the world. Our research is supported by outstanding equipment, infrastructure and professional staff, and is funded by an extensive range of external grants. The School conducts research, research training (MPhil and PhD), Masters and undergraduate education in a wide range of biological and biomedical sciences, within three separate Divisions:

  1. Division of Biomedical Science and Biochemistry (BSB)

Research in BSB covers a wide range of disciplines, much of which fits within two broad themes: host-microbe biology and the biology of membrane proteins. Research interests include microbiology, parasitology, cancer biology, membrane protein structure, function and biophysics, evo-devo, genetics and bioinformatics. Several groups work across a number of these research topics.  The Division aims to address fundamental biomedical or biological questions, with some groups also developing a more translational focus.

  1. Division of Ecology and Evolution (E&E)

E&E is a high performing division with a strong international reputation for developing theory and analytic techniques that transcend specific taxa. We are internationally recognised for our whole organism approach in: evolutionary and behavioural ecology, molecular evolution, systematics, phylogenetics and population genetics, macroevolution/macroecology and physiological ecology. We maintain close links with the Fenner School for the Environment at ANU and the nearby CSIRO. 

    3. Division of Plant Sciences (PS) 

PS research spans translation of genomic sequences and its encoded information to whole-of-system characteristics of plant form and function to understand how plants function in agricultural and native systems. Our research integrates cell and developmental biology, energy biology, photosynthesis, ecophysiology and plant-microbe biology. Our division houses two ARC Centres of Excellence, for Translational Photosynthesis and Plant Energy Biology. We embrace opportunities that link fundamental research with translation outcomes and are a leading centre for training of the next generation of plant biologists. The PS division has supported eight Future Fellows over the past years and provides a welcoming environment for early career researchers.
