Job Details

Two postdoctoral positions are available in the Milner lab at San Diego Biomedical Research Institute (SDBRI) to study mechanisms of cerebrovascular remodeling and blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in two models of neurological disease, with a focus on extracellular matrix (ECM)-integrin-mediated signaling.

In the first project, we use the EAE model of multiple sclerosis to examine the protective influence of mild hypoxia on disease progression, with the goal of defining the underlying mechanisms responsible (Proc Natl Acad Sci, 117, 11126 (2020) and Brain, 144, 402 (2021)). We also aim to define the contribution of specific integrins in driving vascular remodeling or maintenance of BBB integrity (J. Neuroinflamm, 14:217 (2017), Angiogenesis, 21, 251 (2018) and Acta Neuropath. Comm, 7:11 (2019)).

In the second project, we study how mild hypoxia promotes cerebrovascular remodeling and transient BBB disruption, and the preventive role of microglia in minimizing this disruption (Proc Natl Acad Sci, 116, 26029 (2019) and Acta Neuropath Comm, 8: 175 (2020)).

Both positions require a Ph.D. The ideal candidates should be highly motivated and have a strong background working with disease models, and with standard genotyping, immuno-histochemical/fluorescent microscopy, and western blotting techniques. Experience with cognitive/behavioral studies would be a plus. Applicants are expected to have excellent communication and writing skills and be capable of working independently or as part of a team. The positions will remain open until filled. Please send a CV and list of three referees to Dr. Richard Milner at: hr@sdbri.org

San Diego Biomedical Research Institute (SDBRI) is a nonprofit biomedical research institute located in San Diego, California. The mission of SDBRI is to conduct fundamental biomedical research to better understand human disease, and to use this information to contribute to the treatment and prevention of diabetes, cancer, neurological disease, HIV infection and complications of chronic disease. The Principal Investigators at SDBRI are accomplished scientists and well-known and recognized in their areas of expertise. SDBRI is located in the heart of San Diego’s science park area, which is part of the largest and most concentrated centers of science, engineering, and medicine in the United States. San Diego BioMed is a non-profit biomedical research institute focused on finding new ways to accelerate medical advances that maintain health and improve quality of life. In September 2021, San Diego BioMed moved to a larger, state-of-the-art facility located in the heart of the San Diego science park area, one of the largest and most concentrated centers of science, engineering, and medicine in the U.S., a setting that fosters cooperative partnerships, intellectual exchange, and shared resources.

The structure and environment at San Diego BioMed are designed to foster collaboration across disciplines and specialties and to encourage innovation. Brainstorming sessions between investigators in the different fields are held regularly to identify important questions, write joint funding proposals, and coordinate the relevant scientific research. This arrangement maximizes the potential impact of their research for the benefit of the patient population.
