We seek a postdoctoral microbiologist with interests and skills to investigate both basic and translational aspects of the microbial basis of human inflammatory bowel diseases.  Our research is focused on host-microbe interactions in the context of human and mammalian systems and the bidirectional signaling processes that mediate these interactions.  We employ cutting-edge approaches that include cultivation-dependent and -independent technologies for microbial analysis, gene editing of microbial strains, genetically-modified and gnotobiotic mouse models, metabolic and functional measurements, and advanced bioinformatic tools to investigate both the host and the gut microbiome in order to address these questions.  Our newer projects involve the study of community dynamics of the gut microbiome to understand the basis of microbial selection and assemblage and community stability and resilience. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to design and perform the experiments for the research projects and will given the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment in close collaboration with translational scientists as well as clinicians at the University of Chicago.  Job Requirements: PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in areas relating to microbiology, genome sciences, systems biology, biochemistry, and experimental biology .  A strong record of scientific achievement through publications and presentations, as well as a passion for translational science, excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, ability to conduct research independently with strong wet lab skills are required.  Successful postdocs are generally able to work well in a team-science environment. Additionally, experience with bioinformatics and mouse models are preferred. Motivated candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, a brief statement regarding research interests, and a list of 2-3 references with their email addresses. Compensation in the Biological Sciences Division follows the NIH NRSA Stipend scale. Additional information on benefits and being a postdoc in the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division can be found at bsdpostdoc.uchicago.edu.
