Associate Director, Automation Engineering

Gilead Sciences is currently seeking an Associate Director, Automation Engineering for the Biologics Development and Manufacturing site in Oceanside, CA. This position will provide technical leadership and expertise to the Automation Engineering Group and will focus on support of instrumentation and control systems for process, utility, and building systems.

Specific Job Responsibilities
  • Manages project budgets and organizes resources according to team priorities and customer needs.
  • Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards.
  • Ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives.
  • Provides leadership and direction to engineers and contractors.
  • Provides expert project management skills and experience.
  • Manages programs and processes to ensure high quality of operations, equipment maintenance, and compliance with codes, Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs)
  • Interacts with contractors and/or vendors on routine machinery and equipment administration matters.
  • May hire, train, evaluate, and review personnel.
  • Ensures GMP training of all employees.
  • Manages department operational areas.
  • Manages multiple projects of significant complexity and risk. Manages machinery and equipment maintenance and operations functions.
  • Evaluates design processes to modify machinery and equipment; approves estimated cost and designs layouts.
  • Ensures that team personnel are trained and developed to meet changing company needs


Additional responsibilities:
  • Serves as a role model for strong people and project leadership through actions, decisions and directing others.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for cross-functional integration and consults on enhancements or future integrations.
  • Acts as an escalation point for non-routine function issues/decisions.
  • Directs the development of strategic function programs/initiatives, determines metrics for program success, and evaluates performance against metrics.
  • Analyzes industry trends and anticipates changes in the competitive or regulatory landscape to adjust plans as appropriate.
  • Serves as team representative in strategic planning and operating discussions with senior leadership.
  • Operations Management, Strategic Management, Manufacturing Management training/knowledge
  • Advanced leadership skills
  • Budget analysis
  • Project management including process improvements such as Six Sigma/Kaizen
  • Manufacturing, Engineering Services, Quality, Materials, Technical Services, Validation


Knowledge & Skills:
  • Demonstrates extensive understanding and application of process engineering principles, concepts, and practices, and standards.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrates expertise in project management.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.


Education & Experience
  • A Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience, OR a Master's Degree and a minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in engineering in highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in biotech or pharmaceuticals industry.
  • Programming experience with Emerson DeltaV and Allen-Bradley PLC.
  • Knowledge of digital instrumentation and bus technologies (Fieldbus, DeviceNet, etc.)
  • Knowledge of PID control theories and techniques.
  • Experience with control system interfaces including OPC, Ethernet, etc.
  • Knowledge of clean room or classified area design or requirements.
  • Change control and Validation experience related to control and computer systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptually design, scope and project manage complex Automation projects.


Preferred experience
  • Familiarity with BAS/BMS Systems, FT Batch and OSI Pi.
  • Both upgrade of legacy systems and new application installations.
