The Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg, Faculty of Medicine

is offering one

junior professorship position

at the salary grade of W1 with tenure-track to a university professorship at the salary grade W2

in

Single Cell Biology

to be occupied at the earliest possible date.

The junior professorship is to be filled as temporary civil-servant position for an initial period of three years. If successful, the temporary civil-servant status shall be extended to a maximum of six years. The permanent appointment as a university professor at the salary grade of W2 as a lifetime civil servant shall only be granted if the junior professor has proved her/his worth in accordance with the university’s internal concept of quality assurance. The tenure-track professorship is funded by the Federal and State programme promoting young researchers (Tenure-Track Programme).

The professorship is affiliated with the department of Medical Systems Biology (Prof. Dr. D. Grün) (https://www.med.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/systemimmunologie/research/quantitative-single-cell-biology-of-the-immune-system-gruen-lab/) which has been newly established within the framework of the Hightech Agenda of the Bavarian Government and associated with the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS).

The applicant has to represent the subject single cell biology in research and teaching. Successful applicants will have expertise in experimental and/or computational single cell analysis.  An independently developed, innovative research program particularly in the field of systems immunology applying novel high-resolution technologies, and/or computational analysis methods and artificial intelligence/machine learning is expected.

Teaching duties shall include course offers towards the modularized “Biomedicine” program of the University of Würzburg and the elite degree programme “Translational Medicine”. Experience in acquiring funding from third parties as well as in interdisciplinary research cooperations is expected.

Successful candidates require a completed university degree in a relevant subject/field, pedagogic aptitude, and a particular ability or talent for academic work, typically demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate in the field of life or natural sciences (cf. Art. 14 Section 1 Bavarian University Personnel Law, BayHSchPG (in German only)). Applicants for tenure-track positions should find themselves in an early phase of their journey towards professorship and having switched universities after completing their doctorate. If their doctorate was awarded by the Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg, they will have to have spent at least two years away from the Julius-Maximilians-University working in a scientific capacity.

Insofar as employment as researcher or research assistant took place before or after the doctorate, the doctoral and employment phases together should not exceed six years, or nine years within the field of medicine (cf. Art. 14 Section 3 BayHSchPG).

The University of Würzburg attaches considerable importance to the teaching of undergraduates and graduates, and expects appropriate commitment from all teaching staff.

The University of Würzburg strives to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore expressly requests applications from suitably qualified female scientists.

Severely handicapped applicants will be employed preferentially if their aptitude is otherwise essentially the same.

Applications are to be submitted preferably as one PDF file by electronic means together with a 2-page research plan and the documents as specified in the "Leaflet" (instructions on appointment procedures, downloadable at https://www.med.uni-wuerzburg.de/fakultaet/berufungsverfahren/) until 15.08.2021 to f-medizin@uni-wuerzburg.de to the

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

of the Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg

Professor Dr. M. Frosch

Josef-Schneider-Strasse 2 / Building D7

D-97080 Würzburg

Informal inquiries about the position may be directed to Prof. Dr. D. Grün (dominic.gruen@uni-wuerzburg.de).

The application includes the consent of the applicants to the electronic recording of the application documents, the making of copies, the storage and possible forwarding of the application documents to the reviewers, as well as the return of the application documents only after the completion of the procedure.
