The primary purpose of the Research Scientist is to plan, organize, coordinate and participate in scientific research projects. This position will involve close collaboration with PIs, post docs, students and research assistants. Responsible for the development, conduct and analysis of experiments studying genes mediating the carcinogenesis and metastases of head and neck cancers. Selects and manages laboratory personnel. Determines specific goals or objectives to be obtained, evaluates research data and develops and revises techniques or approaches to work problems. Functions in a separate and independent manner in the design and initiation of research experiments. Designs, develops or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. Responsible for laboratory equipment and implementing safety procedures. Presents findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares scientific documents for publication.

Key Functions

Leads efforts to direct funded research into the molecular mechanisms of HPV cancers as well as signatures of lymph node metastases.
  • Oversees and coordinates experiments with other lab members, core facilities or other researchers to assess molecular profiling and mechanistic studies of head and neck cancers.
  • Perform technical laboratory duties, techniques, in vivo and in vitro experiments studying head and neck cancer biology and response to treatments including immunotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
  • Projects may include generation of novel transgenic animals; in vitro and in vivo miRNA assays; next generation approaches to miRNA and mRNA pathways; small animal image-guided radiotherapy; tissue harvesting and microscopy; in vivo and ex vivo immunological assays; in vitro radiosensitivity assays; implementation/development of novel protocols and procedures; execution of experiments; analysis of results.
  • Familiarity with histology, animal husbandry, in vivo surgical techniques, immune and miRNA assays is preferred. Ideal candidates would possess experience in molecular biology, cell culture, and animal models of human cancer.
  • Training and supervising other research personnel on techniques and equipment procedures
  • Maintenance of laboratory safety procedures and records and facilities
  • Collect, analyze, plot data using appropriate software applications, store and record data on computer and lab notebooks
  • Assist in writing of scientific papers for publication, grant applications and presentations at scientific meetings

PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree

: With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred: Five years experience in experimental or scientific work.
