The Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany, is an internationally renowned institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science with a staff of 500 working in the field of fundamental research in chemistry and physics.

A job opening is announced for:

A PhD Position in Light-Matter Interaction at the Atomic Scale

The coherent manipulation of quantum states relies on the interaction of light and matter, which is particularly interesting in the context of quantum information processing. At the atomic scale, several interesting few level systems, which are isolated and protected from the local environment, have emerged, such as single spin systems from atoms or molecules on normal conducting surfaces as well as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states on superconducting surfaces.

The idea of the project is to use scanning tunneling microscopy also in combination with electron spin resonance spectroscopy to address long-standing problems, such as relaxation and coherence times of not just single spin systems, but also YSR states at the atomic scale as well as their interaction with the immediate surroundings. The goal is to understand the dynamics and coherence times of few level systems and how to enhance their isolation and protection.

The successful candidate is a highly motivated and enthusiastic experimentalist with a strong background in condensed matter physics. Experience with scanning tunneling microscopy or electron spin resonance spectroscopy is beneficial. The candidate should enjoy working in a team as well as in an open and dynamic environment. The candidate has to be fluent in English.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the International Max Planck Research School for Condensed Matter Science (IMPRS-CMS). Particularly outstanding candidates may have the opportunity to join the Graduate Center for Quantum Materials (GC-QM).

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from individuals with disabilities. The Max Planck Society endeavours to achieve gender equality and diversity. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

The submission deadline is July 20th, 2021, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Interested candidates should send an application letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and the name of two references to:
