A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Surojit Paul’s laboratory in the Department of Neurology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Albuquerque, USA. The position is supported by NIH funded RO1 grant. Dr. Paul studies the role of a brain-enriched and neuron-specific tyrosine phosphatase, STEP (also known as Ptpn5) in normal brain function, aging and neurological disorders. His group has established a neuroprotective role of STEP in ischemic stroke, and is pursuing an integrated approach at the molecular, cellular and systems level to understand the basis of this neuroprotection and develop STEP-derived therapeutic agents. He currently holds multiple national and international patents on STEP peptide mimetics. Ongoing research in his lab is focused on evaluating the role of STEP in neuroimmune communication and the efficacy of STEP-peptide mimetics in regulating post-ischemic inflammatory response in the brain. The ultimate goal is to translate these preclinical findings into the development of novel approaches to minimize stroke-induced brain damage in patients with or without comorbidities. The research program presents the opportunity to utilize a variety of approaches including cell culture, molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, small animal surgery (rat and mouse models of middle cerebral artery occlusion, implantation of micro-pump etc.), pharmacological intervention in both in vitro and in vivo models, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain, behavioral studies as well as knockout and transgenic mice studies.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree with a strong background in neuroscience and biochemistry. Expertise in cell culture, protein chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and a conceptual understanding of neuronal signal transduction pathways is essential. Candidates should have some research experience in handling rat or mice. Experience in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rodents and behavioral studies is a plus. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent communication and writing skills and capable of working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
