ROLE SUMMARY

The Portfolio & External Research Manager will be responsible for managing the business aspects required to deliver both the internal and external research portfolios within the Internal Medicine Research Unit (IMRU).

The successful candidate will work across Pfizer functional lines to organize and facilitate cross-line leadership meetings to define and operationalize the IMRU portfolio strategy, align on project team scientific deliverables and resource plans, and ensure robust communications and cross-functional alignment across partner lines and other collaborating Research Units on IMRU goals and priorities.

In addition, the candidate will be responsible for managing the overarching External Alliance budget, facilitate IMRU Leadership Team review of scientific deliverables, ensure alignment of external research strategy with Disease Area Strategic imperatives, and track performance of external investment portfolio.

Finally, the candidate will develop and leverage analytical tools to assess the performance of internal and external investments, and leverage portfolio-level insights to inform both the internal portfolio and external sourcing strategies.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio Management
  • Organization of cross-functional IMRU Portfolio governance, resource and strategy meetings and management of Portfolio Committee and IMRU Biology Strategy Review meeting communications.
  • Leverage scientific and drug discovery background to capture strategic, scientific and resource gaps at a project and portfolio levels and facilitate cross-line resolution of portfolio gaps; support annual Portfolio goal setting and budget planning cycles.
  • Work with Research Project Team Leaders and Global Product Development colleagues to ensure integrity of Portfolio data; leverage and analyze portfolio data to generate IMRU-specific performance metrics that will be used to inform IMRU portfolio scientific and resourcing strategy.


External Research
  • Works with IMRU LT, Scientific Leads, Business Development (BD), and/or Procurement to organize, prioritize and manage contracting for external research agreements; Organizes and leads scientific reviews, prioritization of proposals, and budget approvals. Ensures robust communication regarding external portfolio status and deliverables with IMRU LT and key stakeholders.
  • Tracks and manages overall IMRU LT Alliance budget, including development of high level forecasts to support IMRU Budget management.
  • Leverages drug discovery expertise and portfolio management function to assess impact of external investments, enable integrated review of proposed alliances against portfolio project and disease area strategies, and deliver recommendations for addressing scientific gaps or redundancies in external sourcing strategy.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree with 10 years' experience in a biopharmaceutical research environment with significant drug discovery experience.
  • Strong working understanding of the drug research environment, the scientific disciplines, and the role of academic research and how they fit into the drug discovery ecosystem.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment and influencing without direct authority. Excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation-based communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office, MS Teams, and SharePoint;
  • Organizes and defines work independently and collaborates effectively with peers and superiors at different levels; strong teamwork skills; anticipates needs of cross-functional team members and proactively works to resolve issues and provide necessary information.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; experience with handling and QC of large volumes of data and in the development and use of analytical tools such as Excel and/or Spotfire.
  • Ability to independently initiate, organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects simultaneously. Self-motivated to identify and use available resources and proactively reach out to others to identify and implement solutions to problems, when encountered.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with the Pfizer organization, particularly the R&D environment in Cambridge, a plus.
