Job Details

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are an interdisciplinary research team at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at Karolinska Institutet (KI) and SciLifeLab in Stockholm, Sweden (https://www.hausserlab.org).

Within a tumor, individual cancer cells adopt different phenotypes. These differences support tumors in progressing from local to invasive to metastatic and help them become resistant to therapy. We are interested in mapping the evolutionary constraints on the diversity of cancer cell phenotypes, and in exploring how these constraints can be exploited to treat heterogeneous tumors (Hausser&Alon, Nature Reviews Cancer 2020).

Your mission

Our lab combines a broad spectrum of skills, from experimental to data analysis to theoretical. You will bring in data analysis and theory skills. Your responsibilities will include:

  • analyzing large-scale multi-dimensional data, performing evolutionary simulations, building bioinformatics pipelines and developing quantitative theories of tumor architecture
  • collaborating with lab members
  • authoring manuscripts and presenting findings at conferences
  • punctually helping with lab organization
  • applying for funding to help support your research and prepare your next career step

Your profile

  • a PhD degree with strong bioinformatics component
  • a strong quantitative background, for example in the form of a bachelor or masters in areas such as bioinformatics, physics, engineering, statistics, mathematics, …
  • experience with large-scale data analysis and multivariate statistics
  • proficiency in data analysis environments like R or Python, and in scripting (for example linux shell)
  • good knowledge in English written and spoken is required

Expertise in the following fields are not absolute requirement but will be appreciated:

  • single-cell sequencing technologies
  • evolutionary theory, population genetics
  • cancer biology, immunology

In addition, your personal skills will be highly valued.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location:Stockholm

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A cover letter (1 page better, 2 pages max.) that includes answers to these questions: What research questions have you worked on so far? What methods have you used to answer these questions? What have you found? If you could choose any topic, what would you like to work on in the future?
  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • 3 references (name, institution, email)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
