The Department of Biology (www.biology.usu.edu) invites applications for a 1.0 FTE, 9month tenuretrack Assistant Professor position (70% teaching, 25% research, and 5% service) in Biology with an emphasis in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology preferred. The position is at the USU Eastern campus in Price, Utah with an anticipated start date of 1 January 2022.
Teaching responsibilities will include a course load of approximately 9 credits per semester with an emphasis on undergraduate education to support the 4-year Biology BS/BA degree programs. The successful candidate will teach and advise students in Biology courses, which may include Computational Biology, Genetics, Genetics Lab, Evolutionary Biology, Introductory Biology, or others. Teaching will include lecture and laboratory sections. Courses may be scheduled in the evening hours to accommodate student availability and may include broadcast teaching to other USU campuses. Core teaching duties include developing curriculum aligned with Biology Department standards; preparing lectures and discussions; developing student outcomes and assessments; coordinating Biology standards across all courses with the department and other instructors; developing and grading exams; demonstrating commitment to teaching and mentoring students from diverse and underrepresented populations; and supervising teaching assistants, graders, lab assistants, and teaching fellows. Implementation of innovative teaching methods and a commitment to promoting diversity in STEM is expected. Applicants should demonstrate the potential to collaborate on developing effective pedagogical research focused on distance education and STEM learning.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program leading to extramural grantsmanship, scholarly publications, and direction of undergraduate research. The opportunity to mentor graduate student researchers is available. Collaborations with faculty at the USU-Logan and statewide campuses are strongly encouraged. Service activities may include engagement with department, college, or USU-Eastern campus committees, as well as in professional organizations. The incumbent is expected to engage in the local community; specifically, at the USU Eastern campus in Price, as well as engaging in local community activities/support.
A PhD in the biological sciences or a closely related field is required. Preferred qualifications include teaching at the University level, postdoctoral teaching or research experience, and teaching with distance education technologies and pedagogy.

The Department of Biology offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. Majors complete a core of courses that provide an understanding of biological principles. Upperdivision courses provide integration, indepth study, and an opportunity for specialization within the different degree emphases. Additional coursework in chemistry, physics, statistics, and mathematics provides knowledge and analytical skills in these important related fields.
