Applications are sought for the position of Chair of the Department of Systems Biology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Our goal is to develop an internationally recognized Department of Systems Biology that will push the boundaries of cancer research and cancer care by integrating technology development, bioengineering, and data science. We are seeking an individual with a distinguished record of research and professional accomplishments, strong leadership and managerial skills, and a vision to build a world-class research program in cancer systems biology. Thematic areas of interest include, but are not limited to, bioengineering, microfluidics-based systems biology, single-cell omics data integration, and gene network connectivity. The chair will cultivate a collaborative environment to maximize the impact of institutional investments and leverage our unique resources as the largest and top-ranking cancer center in the US to advance interdisciplinary domain expertise and technology development. The chair will foster an environment that values and prioritizes education and encourages faculty involvement in the departmental educational programs for training graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows in interdisciplinary research. The department will address a critical need that is currently missing at MD Anderson, namely to foster the development of new multi-parameter analyses and predictive technologies aimed at cancer research and clinical cancer care.

To accomplish the mission of the Department of Systems Biology, ideal applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Be known nationally and internationally in their research field;
  • Demonstrate skills in programmatic development and evaluation, including negotiation of agreements with research, clinical or industry partners;
  • Have research objectives that complement and contribute to the research-driven patient care mission of the institution;
  • Demonstrate administrative competence to ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of the department, resolving operational issues, and managing financial and human resources;
  • Have experience as an academic role model for faculty and trainees; and
  • Show commitment to the continued support and growth of the department, its faculty, and its mission.

Ideal applicants must be established in a field of research related to systems biology, quantitative biology, therapeutic design, discovery, mechanisms of action and resistance, and translational research. Candidates should be at the rank of full professor or comparable administrative position and have demonstrated considerable ability and meaningful contributions in education and mentoring of trainees and junior faculty.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) from an accredited academic institution required. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to building a diverse community of faculty and encourages women and minorities to apply. Interested candidates should send a copy of their curriculum vitae and three references along with a supplemental narrative statement to address their qualifications by September 1, 2021 to Josh.Ward@KornFerry.com.
