SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Senior Research Assistant position is to provide supervision, special training to technical personnel, and/or highly technical work in medical and related research projects. The Senior Research Assistant conducts experiments in the area of molecular and cellular biology of cancer. Discusses goals of each project with supervisor and receives verbal and/or written instructions from the supervisor on how to conduct an assay or experiment to achieve the goals of the project. Based on these discussions and basic instructions, develop a step-by-step written procedure of specific actions required to conduct the experiment prior to proceeding.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Cell Culture and Patient Tissues

Cell culture - maintain stock cancer cell lines growing, expanding, freezing utilizing sterile techniques.
As the procedures may require handling of patient tissues, familiarity with safety procedures for handling these samples is necessary.

MacroMolecules and Use of Hazardous/Radioactive Substrates

Ability to isolate and assay macromolecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins. Successful completion of these assays may require knowledge (or acquisition thereof) of molecular biology techniques.

Some procedures will require the use of hazardous and/or radioactive substrates. It will, therefore, be necessary to maintain appropriate environmental surveys for radioactivity and other hazardous materials that may be used for experimental purposes. Appropriate records of hazardous chemicals and reagents may also be required.

Record Keeping

Manually record data immediately in notebook during experiment. Analysis of data and preparation of graph, charts, and/or tables suitable for publication in scientific journals. Knowledge of word processing programs (MS Word) and spreadsheets (Excel) is required. Discussion of the results from each assay immediately after completion is necessary to insure accuracy and comparability with previous results of similar assays. Discrepancies should be reconciled as soon as possible. Some instruments are controlled by computer software so that the ability/willingness to work with computers is essential.

Teaching Others

Help the lab manager teach laboratory techniques to graduate students, surgical fellows and other research personnel.

Assisting Others

Assist other personnel in laboratory with handling of experimental animals as necessary. These experiments will include injection of cancer cells, assessing tumor size, and harvesting of tumors.

Professional Literature

Read and discuss selected literature pertaining to research projects with supervisors and others in laboratory. Literature searches using computer and/or printed material will be required.

Other duties as assigned

Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field. Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.
