Site Name: USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: Jun 7 2021 Computational Sciences accelerates the way GSK discovers and develops transformational medicines by delivering designs and design strategies enabled by the integration of advanced computational methods, predictive in silico models and expert analyses. Computational Sciences is the center of excellence for in silico science across GSK R&D and is focused on driving the cutting edge of predictive modeling and informatics in the discovery and development of medicines. The Computational Sciences team partners with other R&D lines to develop in silico platforms of the future and apply deep subject matter expertise to drive drug discovery programs. We are seeking a scientific leader who is passionate about driving the use of external and internal protein data and leading-edge computational methods to enable smart risk-taking and objective decision-making in the selection of novel, tractable targets, the design of better biomolecules, in fewer steps and with fewer passive mutations, minimizing risks for developmental liabilities and the design of biological reagents with increased probability of technical success in terms of expression and crystallization with decreased production times. The Head of Protein Design and Informatics will have strategic accountability for in silico program support for the global biopharma discovery portfolio. They will also be responsible for partnering with AI/ML and Data Science and Engineering groups to deliver models and platforms that accelerate biopharma discovery. The individual will be an active participant of the Computational Sciences leadership team. They will be responsible for leading a team of Ph.D. level scientists with a wide diversity of skillsets ranging from molecular biology and protein engineering to bioinformatics and machine learning. The leader of this group must be passionate about working in a matrix setting to discover new medicines for patients by delivering on GSK's predict first strategy. This requires close collaboration with strategic stakeholders in the broader organization. We are seeking a scientific leader who is passionate about working in a team setting to discover new medicines for patients by delivering on the predict first strategy for the US project portfolio. Our scientists are responsible for generating testable hypotheses that drive discovery programs, extracting and analyzing decision-making data associated with molecular structure and building predictive models based on such data. The successful applicant will be an opinion leader conversant with cutting edge computational methods, who will lead program direct support computational scientists in the advancement of drug discovery programs to successful drug candidate selection. They will also be an expert consultant & resource for discovery program teams and the broader R&D scientific community. The individual will require an extremely rare combination of extensive life sciences domain expertise, computational and data science expertise and experience managing teams comprised of diverse skillsets. The individual will work collaboratively to align the Biopharm portfolio of scientific and program-support activities. Some key responsibilities associated with the role: Provide strategic leadership and scientific oversight for a team that generates and applies computational models to impact the drug discovery pipeline timelines and success rates from lead discovery to development by balancing the portfolio appropriately. Active member of the Computational Sciences Leadership team responsible for defining the vision and setting the strategic direction of the group worldwide and for the implementation of that strategy. Ensure alignment of that strategy with key partner functions in the broader organization. Key opinion leader, expert resource and consultant for other members of the Medicine Design department and the broader R&D community Accountable for the quality of predictive science generated and disseminated by the group Line management of computational scientist, bioinformatics and protein engineering leaders (leader of leaders) Advocate for the opportunities afforded by scientific computation and automation. Champion/drive a “predict-first” culture by maximizing use of predictive technology in experimental lines. Accountable for the identification, validation and integration of emergent trends and opportunities in computational simulation and modelling that impact drug discovery by accelerating the pipeline through increased efficacy and reduced cycle times.
