Senior Computational Biologist- Rare Disease

ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer's Rare Disease Research Unit (RDRU) is dedicated to the development of novel therapeutics for orphan diseases. Our growing Integrative Biology team, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is looking for a highly motivated and skilled computational biologist to contribute to our target discovery and drug development efforts. You will work together in teams with laboratory biologists, computational biologists, geneticists, and statisticians within the RDRU and across the broader Pfizer community in a friendly and highly collaborative environment to deliver impactful and actionable insights predominantly from multi-omics data sets. A successful candidate will understand the statistical principles underlying the analysis of common data types such as bulk RNAseq, scRNAseq, proteomics, and genomics in addition to the technical skills required to process these data types in HPC and cloud-based environments.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

There is some flexibility to tailor the responsibilities of this role commensurate to the skill and experience of the applicant.

• Design, execute, document, and communicate analysis of multiple 'omics data types
  
• Apply principles of sound statistical design
  
• Stay current with relevant biological and computational literature, conference proceedings, and emerging methodologies
  
• Execute data analysis projects consistent with specified timelines and milestones
  
• Synthesize and clearly communicate study findings and analyses to a diverse audience of internal partners, leadership, and collaborators
  
• Integrate analyses of multiple data types to uncover novel insights
  

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Background in biological and/or quantitative sciences; PhD in a biology, cellular/molecular biology, genetics, computational biology, data science, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience
  
• Sound understanding of core statistical principles
  
• Proficient in R, familiar with at least one scripting language (e.g., Python) and SQL
  
• Proficient in Unix-based command line interface and familiar with high performance computing and cloud-based environments
  
• Fluency in start-to-end analysis of at least two types of 'omics data such as bulk RNAseq, scRNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, ChIP-seq, proteomics, metabolomics, or epigenetics with particular expertise in at least one
  
• Proficient in standard methods for reproducible research such as Jupyter Notebook and/or Rmarkdown
  
• Familiarity with versioning tools such as git
  
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize amongst competing time-sensitive projects
  
• Strong desire and demonstrated ability to continually learn new skills
  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Intermediate or advanced understanding of human biology/medicine, ideally with experience in any one of the following: neurology/neurodegenerative disease, repeat expansion disease, cardiomyopathy, non-oncological hematology, or metabolic disease
  
• Track record of innovative and impactful research including peer-reviewed publications
  
• Experience coding and deploying data visualization applications such as R Shiny
  
• Experience implementing and maintaining a relational database
