Investigator, Materials Science
Site Name: USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: May 29 2021 We're seeking highly motivated Early Phase scientist to join our Chemical Development team at our Upper Providence site, in the suburbs of Philadelphia. As a member of Chemical Development, you will use your preformulation and materials science expertise to provide holistic understanding of the relationship between structure, powder properties, process, and product performance. Your work will contribute to the development and deployment of state-of-the-art processes and technologies to enable the delivery of our medicines. Chemical Development supports the small molecule portfolio in GSK Pharma R&D and develops the manufacturing routes and processes that turn those molecules into medicines. Through our network of 86 manufacturing sites, each year we produce nearly 4 billion packs of medicine and we are committed to widening access to our products so that more people may benefit. Located less than 30 miles from the center of Philadelphia, our R&D hub at Upper Providence, is built on 281 acres of gently rolling land and is home to over 3,000 of our R&D staff. With this concentration of scientists, you will find a culture that inspires innovation, teamwork, and personal development while operating with transparency, respect and integrity. At GSK we are committed to overcoming some of the biggest challenges in global health; delivering products of value in a responsible, sustainable way; and providing access to medicine for the world's poorest communities. Materials Science provides holistic understanding of how structure influences particle and powder properties to design a particle process which optimizes drug product processing and performance. The environment is highly technical and dynamic as you will be collaborating across multi-disciplinary project teams. You will thrive in this environment if you are able to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks, communicate your recommendations clearly, and if you are a team player who enjoys working in diverse multi-disciplinary teams. This is a fast-paced and dynamic role where you will combine the information generated in laboratory studies with your strong knowledge of early phase development (LO to Ph1) to identify the critical API attributes towards the development of sustainable pharmaceutical process and manufacture (drug substance and drug product). As projects advance through development, materials scientists support project teams by optimizing the particle formation processes, analyzing data and supporting plant campaigns, from lead optimization up to and including the transfer and industrialization of manufacturing processes to commercial facilities around the globe. At GSK, we are committed to growing with our talent, and we will provide you the tools to own and design your development plan and pursue a career trajectory in the areas that interest you the most. Working at GSK offers opportunity to broaden your experience across R&D and our medicine supply chain. Subject to approval of reasonable request GSK are a modern employer and offer flexible working hours and conditions. Key Responsibilities: Design experiments to support early phase CMC assessment and development (Lead Optimization to candidate selection to Phase 1) of pharmaceutical products. Advice Research Units (RU) and CMC on the quality of the candidates, present recommendations at governance reviews, and author the relevant sections of required documents, like the Technical Evidence Document at Candidate Selection. Lead, design, and conduct Version and Form screens to assess the experimental space and provide options for the project. Work effectively and collaboratively on multi-disciplinary development teams, alongside RU scientists, Chemists, Engineers, Formulators, Analysts, Modelers, and other Material Scientists. May lead a matrix team of experts. Independently execute laboratory protocols and experiments to link the structural and bulk properties of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to its performance downstream in order to inform R&D decision making Perform data management and data interpretation, recording results effectively and communicating results in technical reports. Effectively present at internal meetings. May participate in technical reviews on projects. Comply with local regulatory and data integrity requirements, including cGMP and GSK policies and procedures, with high quality and attention to one's own safety. Why you? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: Bachelors degree in Engineering, Materials Science with 10 years of industry experience; MS with 5 years; or PhD Experience in preformulation experimental design Experience in physical chemistry and its effect on product performance Experience in independent planning and execution of experiments Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: PhD in a related subject Experience with physical and solid state characterization techniques of pharmaceutical products Experience in preformulation/developability support of discovery teams Experience in supporting multiple projects simultaneously. Experience in independent interpretation of analytical data Excellent problem-solving and decision making skills Why GSK?
