Position Title: Research Scientist

Summary

The primary purpose of the Research Scientist position is to apply technical expertise and experience to coordinate, design, and carry out cancer research projects while following lab standard operating procedures.

Key Functions
  • Plans organize, directs, and participates in experiments on cancer research projects.
  • Selects and purchases new equipment in consultation with other professional staff, and maintains technical equipment for the entire laboratory. Manages inventory of biologics and replenishes them as needed. Orders materials for research studies and follows up on orders as needed.
  • Compiles, writes, and evaluates data for publication purposes and submits weekly project results to PI in appropriate digital format.
  • Supervises work of subordinates and reviews specific goals to be attained.
  • Interviews classified personnel for laboratory positions and are responsible for training in selected technical areas, as well as training in all areas of safety.
  • Assists PI to assure correct practice of laboratory safety and universal precautions standards as required under institutional guidelines, including but not limited to maintenance of institutional regulatory records (safety manuals, MSDS, etc.) and performance of required laboratory testing (radiation wipe tests, etc.). Take all training classes required by the institution and pass annual examinations when required. Maintain knowledge of all safety requirements. Coordinate and share responsibilities of laboratory maintenance and operation issues with co-workers.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education Required: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree Experience. Required: With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Experience Preferred: Preferred: Five years of related experience to include research work at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Knowledge of scientific instruments used in related fields of research-- such as electron microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, computer imaging, pharmacokinetics, and artificial intelligence computer systems design.
