Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division ( has an opening for a Cryo-EM Facility Manager to join the team!


This position requires expertise in biological cryo electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the in-house transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) and accessory equipment in excellent working order as well as training new users, scheduling access, and assisting with the collection of high-quality data. Duties will include providing complex technical support for sophisticated biotech-laboratory equipment including maintenance, calibration, repair and troubleshooting of instrumentation, control systems, experimental apparatuses, computers, and peripheral equipment as well as coordinating and scheduling vendor related maintenance and repairs.


What You Will Do:

Cryo-EM Facility Use Coordination and Management

• Maintain JEO3200, JEOL1400, and JEOL1200 microscopes. This role includes monthly TEM performance and calibration tests, daily alignment checks, troubleshooting equipment performance issues, reporting microscope errors to supervisor and scheduling repairs with service engineers.

• Assist in the selection, procurement, and installation of additional cryo-EM equipment over time.

• Train and supervise students, postdocs and other users in sample preparation and microscope operation.

• Develop and implement high through-put workflows for data collection.

• Maintain general upkeep and cleanliness of cryo-EM areas.

• Maintain record of use and research productivity on the various TEMs.

• Participate in collaborative research projects.

• Work collaboratively with colleagues from other science divisions including but not limited to the Molecular Foundry, Materials Sciences Division, and Earth and Environmental Sciences Area.

• Guide users in efficient use of cryo-EM facilities.

• Coordinate with other cryo-EM support staff to ensure efficient use and functionality of cryo-EM facilities.

• Independently develops resolution to complex instrument problems to ensure equipment capability and availability including documenting standard operating/repair/maintenance procedures, scheduled preventative maintenance, staff training, instrument calibration, vendor field service scheduling, spare parts management, equipment inventory.


Instrumentation Maintenance and Reporting

• Serve as the subject matter expert for all instrumentation aspects of the Cryo-EM Facility and coordinate all support efforts with internal and external users to provide efficient and effective service.

• Independently troubleshoot complex technical problems including designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and proposing solutions.

• Prepare instructional guides for repairing, calibrating, and maintaining equipment.

• Foster collaborative working relationships with all levels of employees at the Lab.  Partner seamlessly and effectively with colleagues in Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S), Facilities, and Procurement as needed.


Strategic Planning for future cryo-EM Facilities

• Serve as subject matter expert in the planning, development, and construction of new cryo-EM facilities.  This may be construction of a new Cryo-EM center on the LBNL campus or the transition of operations from the current facility to BioEPIC when construction is completed.

• Guide the design and build out of cryo-EM facilities in a manner that is within budget and that meets the programmatic needs of facility users and that is consistent with LBNL’s cryo-EM strategic priorities.

• See facility development through the construction process.

• Plan and coordinate the relocation and installation of instruments into the new facilities.


What is Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience in structural biology and a minimum of 6-8 years related professional technical experience.

• Experience in use and maintenance of high-end electron microscopes.

• Experience in analysis of biological systems with single particle cryo-EM or cryo-electron tomography.

• Experience in user training and basic script writing for data collection.

• Knowledge and experience in installation and operation of automatic data collection software. (e.g., serialEM) 

• Solid interpersonal skills and communication skills.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.

• Must be capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing tasks efficiently.


Desired Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in a related field.



• This is a full time, 3 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
