Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center

Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) is seeking an outstanding, collaborative, and innovative scientist leader for the Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research. This endowment offers an exciting opportunity to join and help grow a world-class research program in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, in particular pancreatic cancer. Applications from investigators focused on gastrointestinal cancer, particularly but not exclusively pancreatic cancer, regardless of discipline including clinical research, basic science, drug discovery, data science, epidemiology, etc. are welcomed. Exceptional candidates would be provided resources for building a cross-disciplinary research program in their area of expertise.

The IU School of Medicine is the major cancer care provider in the state. Our gastroenterology and GI surgery programs were recently recognized as High Performing by US News and World Report. The IUSCCC Pancreas Cancer Clinic treats patients from around the country, drawn by the outstanding surgical team and state-of-the-art multidisciplinary cancer therapy including precision genomics. Our surgeons have the highest volume of pancreatic resections in the nation. Drawn from multiple IU campuses and Purdue, the 17 clinicians and 57 basic scientists of the Indiana Pancreatic Cancer Working Group collaborate in therapeutic trials, translational research projects, biobanking, epidemiologic studies, genetic analyses, and quality of life investigations. Particular expertise among includes early detection, drug discovery, tissue engineering, and cancer cachexia.

The Myles Brand Chair will join an institution with a proud tradition of excellence in cancer research and care. IUSCCC members developed the curative therapy for testis cancer, pioneered the field of cord blood transplantation, and were at the forefront of identifying effective treatments for NF1, a previously untreatable and sometimes life-threatening disease. IUSCCC members and funded researchers also hail from the IU Schools of Nursing, Public Health, and Science and the Regenstrief Institute. The center’s robust externally funded and interdisciplinary research in cancer control and cancer survivorship are recognized nationally, as are our interdisciplinary training programs that produce some of our nation's finest cancer researchers.

Today both the IU School of Medicine and IUSCCC are on a phenomenal trajectory. The school's NIH funding has increased more than 95 percent in five years, setting records every year. Likewise, the cancer center has experienced tremendous growth. Over the course of its most recent NCI funding period, it achieved a 38 percent increase in NCI funding, a 176 percent increase in multi-PI grants and attracted more than 30 new investigators in cancer research to IU. In recognition, it was designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the NCI in 2019.

In addition to the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, IU School of Medicine is home to many programs and initiatives that support cancer research and care, including:

• The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, a statewide partnership between IU, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame that promotes and supports translational research.

• The Brown Center for Immunotherapy, a center focused on developing new treatments for cancer and other diseases through the use of cell-based immunotherapies.

• IU School of Medicine’s Precision Health Initiative, a $120 million initiative which aims to deploy an array of precision health techniques to develop new therapies for triple negative breast cancer, multiple myeloma and pediatric sarcoma, and to identify successful prevention strategies for Alzheimer’s disease and gestational diabetes

• The Indiana Collaborative Initiative for Talent Enrichment (INCITE), a $25 million program funded by the Lilly Endowment dedicated to attracting top scientists to IU School of Medicine in partnership with life science leaders such as Eli Lilly and Co., Roche, Dow and Cook.

IU School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the country with more than 20,000 living alumni and 3,000 learners on nine campuses across the state. Its diverse faculty is made up of 2,700 full-time members and 3,200 volunteer faculty who are responsible for training medical, graduate, and postgraduate students.
