Gene Editing Research Associate

Company Overview:

Vertex has established a new site in the Boston area where research, development, and clinical manufacturing for cell and genetic therapies is primarily based. Cell and genetic therapies represent two rapidly emerging therapeutic modalities with the potential to treat—and even cure—several serious diseases, including sickle cell disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and type 1 diabetes. Further investment in a research site specifically designed to advance these programs will be key to Vertex’s continued and sustained leadership in these exciting, cutting-edge therapeutic areas. At Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) our research teams bring together the best biology, technologies, and enhanced manufacturing capabilities to ensure we deliver cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as possible.

Job Summary:

Our Gene Editing Research Team is looking to hire several Research Associates. The ideal candidates will be adept at executing focused research activities to support the development of CRISPR-Cas9 based gene editing therapies. The Research Associates will work together with other Scientists and Research Associates to develop novel gene editing tools and to evaluate and advance lead assets for our therapeutic programs. The candidates are expected to display a high level of passion, drive, and determination, and complete work in a resourceful, proactive and timely manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform in vitro and cell-based studies to advance our CRISPR-based gene therapy programs
  • Apply state-of-the-art molecular and cell biology techniques to one or several of the following research areas:
    • CRISPR guide RNA screens and identification of lead candidates
    • Assessment of gene editing efficiency in primary cells and evaluation of OFF-target activity using Next-Generation-Sequencing-based assays
    • Develop next generation AAV vectors
    • Develop and improve molecular and cellular assays to support our gene editing programs
  • Troubleshoot challenges arising during protocol execution and identify opportunities for protocol and/or process improvement
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with a highly integrated cross-functional research team
  • Maintain clear and complete experimental records

Key Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or related discipline with 1-2 years post graduate experience. Exceptional candidates with BA/BS degree and an extensive record of highly relevant experience will also be considered
  • Extensive hands-on experience in molecular biology (including molecular cloning), cell culture, nucleic acids and protein analysis, assay development and data analysis
  • Experience in one or several of the following areas is a strong plus: CRISPR-based gene editing, Next-Generation Sequencing, mammalian cell culture, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) assays, AAV Vector biology, FACS, ddPCR, confocal imaging, and cell-based assays
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment or independently when needed
  • Exemplary work ethic and commitment to self-development and self-improvement
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
