SUMMARY

This is a part-time position at 50% FTE (20 hours per week). The primary purpose of the Coordinator, Research Laboratory position is to provide supervision and technical management in laboratory operations, which includes the authority to hire and evaluate performance. Impacts the management, planning, development, budget and other fiscal duties of a laboratory facility in the Department of Epigenetics and Molecular Carcinogenesis.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Research Support
Assist the Principal Investigator by coordinating projects in a programmatic area or research laboratory. Coordinate interaction with collaborating PI's. Function in a separate and independent manner in initiating, planning and executing experiments to achieve specific objectives in research projects within a program. Evaluate research data and interpret results. Develop and revise protocols, procedures, techniques. Design, modify and adapt equipment. Compile, write and submit reports to superiors. Assist with development of grant applications and other proposals.

Expertise and Specialization
Support projects for which the incumbent is particularly qualified in terms of extensive training and experience. Provide expertise in a specific line of investigation and/or expertise in a specialized area of technology. Coordinate and consult with collaborators and/or other laboratories needing access to highly specialized skills and/or technology to resolve problems. Exercise considerable independence in designing, developing, modifying new techniques. Introduce/implement new technology. Provide specialized training to the laboratory or to other collaborators or labs.

Laboratory Organization
Coordinate overall laboratory; anticipate problems, troubleshoot and keep things running smoothly. Determine staffing needs and schedule personnel. Interview, counsel and evaluate laboratory personnel; may make hiring decisions. Maintain laboratory supply inventory; recommend purchases based on anticipated workload and funds available. Recommend replacement, purchase of new equipment. Assure lab spending is charged appropriately to the multiple funding sources supporting the lab. Ensures that laboratory is prepared for inspection and safety accreditation. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree.

Certification: None.

Preferred Certification: None.

Experience: Five years of experience in scientific, research or clinical laboratory to include three years in a lead/supervisory capacity. With preferred degree, three years of required experience in a lead/supervisory capacity.

Preferred Experience: Experience at an M.D. Anderson research laboratory.
