What You Will Achieve

As part of the Comparative Medicine team, you will support the Worldwide Research & Development site by managing a vivarium to deliver flawless animal care and welfare and will assure the quality of care and the animal facility environment is in compliance with local regulations and AAALAC International guidelines partnering with Research and Development Research Units and Partner lines to facilitate study support.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Oversee the operations of two vivaria that currently house mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits.
  • Develop and implement appropriate quality assurance programs, planning and maintenance of operating budgets, purchase of capital equipment and supplies and effective management of physical resources within Comparative Medicine.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all facilities maintenance, upgrades, or vivaria renovation projects.
  • Manage and engage animal care staff in the pursuit of flawless husbandry and animal care and welfare by ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Support the career and personal development of the animal care and technical staff.
  • Responsible for the proper operational and hands on husbandry training of all animal care staff.
  • Work closely with local and global Pfizer teams such as Environmental Health and Safety, and Occupational Health and Wellness to ensure a safe environment for all individuals working in the vivaria.
  • Support operational excellence by collecting metrics for efficiently managing resources.
  • Collaborate with Comparative Medicine colleagues at other sites to share practices in managing resources and standardizing operational processes.
  • Participate as an active member of the La Jolla Comparative Medicine Leadership team.
  • Assure that the care and welfare of laboratory animals is provided in compliance with local regulations, USDA, and AAALAC International guidelines.
  • May be required to work under one of the following: The United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy and/or AAALAC International accreditation standards.


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • BA/BS Degree in Life Sciences or related field
  • LATG certification
  • Progressive supervisory experience in laboratory animal setting
  • Demonstrated adequate depth of technical/line knowledge to coach direct reports and work well in a matrixed global organization
  • A minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Ability to demonstrate level of operational skills and abilities


Nice-to-Have
  • CMAR certification
  • Supervisory experience in a pharmaceutical setting

This is an Essential Personnel role
  • Essential Personnel are defined as the staff who are required to report to their designated work location, to ensure the operation of essential functions or departments during an emergency, as determined by Pfizer, or when the business has suspended operations.
  • There are some individuals who may be required to perform essential services remotely and those individuals will be identified in advance and notified by their supervisors, but in most cases Essential Personnel are required to be on-site during an emergency or suspension of operations.
