Metrology/Calibration Specialist

The purpose of this position is to calibrate and adjust equipment in lab or onsite in accordance with the customer and requirements; may assist in creating calibration procedures for new equipment. The Metrology/Calibration Specialist will also supervise and perform scheduled calibration and corrective maintenance and repair activities on instruments and equipment used across Gilead NJ site.

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Review and approve calibration technician work.
  • Manage contracted technicians.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and calibrate instruments and equipment.
  • Open/Investigate Deviations and Out of Tolerance events.
  • Generate calibration data sheets for new instruments
  • Ensure activities are accomplished in a safe manner and with quality.
  • Strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures and cGMPs.
  • Work in a highly productive and efficient manner to maximize the quantity of activities completed.
  • Ensure work is appropriately communicated to system operators and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure work order documentation is completed accurately and completely.
  • Identify waste, work flow interrupters, safety and other opportunities for improvement, recommend solutions, and assisting with implementation.
  • Identify opportunities to learn new skills and actively participate in development that will improve overall team performance.
  • Calibrates inspections, measurements and tests equipment in lab and onsite for accuracy in accordance with established calibration procedures; (e.g. Chemical, Electrical, Physical/Dimensional, Light/Color, Mass/Weight, Sound, Electrical, Pressure/Flow, Temperature, Force, Mass, Velocity, Torque & Volume, Time/Frequency equipment, systems and controls).
  • Performs calibrations for in lab and onsite locations following prescribed procedures.
  • Understands basic uncertainty contributor and standard deviation calculations.
  • Variation - understanding of variance of measurements and procedure to next level of step of knowledge.
  • Records data gathered during calibration within CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Identifies and utilizes appropriate measurement procedures. Generates certificates of calibration and/or out of tolerance reports as required and in correct media appropriate to meet customer requirements.
  • Maintains secondary or intrinsic and/or working calibration standards.
  • Uses calibration software when required to expedite calibration times and to adjust calibration devices.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


Knowledge & Skills
  • Able to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
  • Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor.
  • Able to effectively present information to an internal department and/or large groups of employees.
  • Intermediate skills with Desktop publishing, Microsoft Office Suite and Online Help.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 and Laboratory Accreditation.
  • Able to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
  • Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor with a strong, professional customer service orientation.


Required Education & Experience
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) with a minimum of eight (8) years of experience.
  • Experience with calibrations and instrument troubleshooting in a regulated environment (GMP, ISO, etc).
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related experience in instrument calibration.
  • Experience supervising calibration technicians.
  • Work experience in instrumentation and control, installing, calibrating, maintaining, and repairing equipment or related equivalent.


Preferred Experience
  • An Associate's Degree (AA/AS) in scientific field of study.
  • Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL) experience.
  • Strong computer skills, CMMS Blue Mountain and Maximo experience.
  • Troubleshoot and repair instruments and equipment.
