The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University’s Manhattanville campus.

The Staff Associate I will support the Salzman Lab in investigating the neuronal circuits that process aversive and appetitive experiences in rodents. The Staff Associate I will gain proficiency in a dynamic, collaborative research environment.

The Staff Associate I will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

• Perform tasks related to rodent surgical procedures and welfare maintenance: Perform rodent perfusions to fix brain tissue and perform whole-brain tissue histology; perform animal husbandry; handling of rodents for behavioral task performance; assistance with performance of surgeries in rodents

• Uses software applications to process data sets

• Routine lab management activities, including ordering supplies, sustaining inventories and maintenance of instruments and assist with administrative and documentation tasks related to experiments

Minimum Degree Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, the Biological Sciences or other related area of science and/or engineering is required.

Minimum Qualifications
4 years of professional experience required; Must possess strong organizational skills, keep excellent notes and have a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation as well as the ability to work independently within a diverse and dynamic team environment.

Preferred qualifications include:
prior experience in rodent wet labs, rodent handling and surgery. Experience in performing tissue histology and animal husbandry; experience with ImageJ and profieciency using interfaces such as Matlab, R-Studio, Arduino and Python; programming experience in any and all of above helpful.
