ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer currently has a Senior Scientist position opening for a Structural Biologist in the Structural and Molecular Sciences (SMS) department in Groton, CT. We are an integrated and highly collaborative team of colleagues with technical expertise in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology. We have a strong track record of delivering structures of both soluble and integral membrane proteins by X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. We actively collaborate with Pfizer drug discovery teams across multiple therapeutic areas including Immunology & Inflammation, Internal Medicine, Vaccines, and Rare Diseases, with a mission to advance drug and vaccine discovery efforts by providing integrated molecular and structural insights into therapeutic targets, lead molecules, and protein-ligand interactions. The preferred candidate will be a highly innovative scientist with a desire to pursue challenging biomolecular targets for structure-based drug discovery. He or she will have significant experiences in prosecuting gene-to-structure approaches including molecular biology, protein engineering, expression, purification and characterization, x-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Optimize and generate protein constructs for functional expression and stabilization
  • Purify functional proteins or protein complexes for biochemistry, biophysics, and structure determination
  • Develop and apply innovative biophysical approaches to enable hit identification, validation, target engagement, and MOA studies
  • Carry out structural biology of target protein or large protein complex by x-ray crystallography and/or cryo-EM approaches
  • Generate target protein/ligand complex structures to drive iterative structure-based drug design.
  • Be part of multi-disciplinary teams to support discovery projects across diverse disease areas.
  • Remain current in published literature and apply new findings to address project challenges.
  • Effective oral and written communication of experimental work and analysis.


QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctoral degree or equivalent in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Structural Biology, or related field
  • 1-3 years of postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent) in academia or industry
  • Solid background in molecular biology including construct design, cloning, and expression in a variety of cell systems
  • Significant experience with diverse protein purification techniques for production of recombinant proteins and protein complexes
  • Experienced with various crystallization methods for both soluble and membrane protein targets
  • Capable of pursuing large protein or complex structures by cryo-EM
  • Proven track record of structure determination of both soluble and membrane proteins
  • Has advanced knowledge of concepts in structural biology and demonstrated their use in problem solving and drug development


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working knowledge in various biophysical methods and biochemical assays
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to prepare, evaluate, and present scientific work in internal and external meetings.
  • Independent and creative scientist with an innate ability to form strong partnerships with others.
