Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Joshua A. Gordon, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join his laboratory within the Integrative Neuroscience Section (INS) in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Under the co-direction of staff scientist Dr. David A. Kupferschmidt, the INS focuses on probing the neural circuit basis of normal working memory and its dysfunction in animal models of genetic susceptibility to schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. The INS team uses mouse behavior, in vivo electrophysiology, fiber photometry and miniscope imaging, opto- and chemogenetics, viral tracing, and other modern neuroscience tools to further understanding of the neural communication and computation within and between brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus that support normal and disordered cognition.

Training Environment: The INS is a team of diverse, interdisciplinary and collaborative neuroscientists. The INS is part of a broader cohort of world-class scientists within NINDS, and a neuroscience community spanning several NIH institutes conducting basic, translational, and clinical research. Postdoctoral fellows at the NIH have free access to comprehensive career, professional, and personal development courses/activities provided through the nationally recognized Office of Intramural Training and Education. Stipend value of the fellowship will be commensurate with the candidate’s training and experience according to NIH guidelines.

Qualifications: Applicants must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. in a neuroscience-related discipline, and less than five years of postdoctoral research experience at the official start date of the INS position. Applicants with experience in in vivo physiology (electrophysiology, imaging), circuit manipulation technologies, mouse behavior, and/or programming are particularly encouraged to apply. Demonstrable scientific curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, as well as dedication to teamwork and collaboration are qualities sought in any new addition to the INS.
