Staff Scientist 1 (Facility Head)

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking applications from highly motivated individuals to serve as a Staff Scientist/Facility Head in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD) in Bethesda, MD. The successful candidate will help create and directly manage a shared Single-Cell Sequencing Core within CARD. CARD is a collaborative initiative between the NIA and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) that supports basic, translational, and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias (AD/ADRD). CARD’s central mission is to initiate, stimulate, accelerate, and support research that will lead to the development of improved treatments and preventions for these diseases.

The successful candidate must be committed to scientific excellence and highly collaborative research and will foster this throughout the development of this research facility. The successful individual must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields, with at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent. The individual should be an expert in the application and/or development of single-cell sequencing methods from cells and tissue. Experience in the generation and analysis of large-scale sequencing data is essential as is a history of effectively managing large collaborative projects. Experience in supervising and mentoring is important. Experience in neurodegenerative disease research is preferred as is experience in managing a facility. The successful candidate will manage projects and collaborations through project initiation, strategy development, strategic planning, execution, and closeout of phases of projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for problem solving and making key decisions to ensure completion of multiple projects, goals, and competing priorities. A proven track record in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships is highly desirable.

The selected candidate will manage resources from CARD for funding start-up costs and on-going program operations, and will be responsible for managing budget, personnel, and space within the facility. The incumbent will have a role in assisting the CARD Director in project prioritization, and in identifying research and development opportunities that fit within the program and mission of CARD.

Staff Scientists/Facility Heads do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Laboratory. Although this Staff Scientist/Facility Head will be supervised by the CARD Director, they will be interacting with the scientists from the IRP and scientific community at large. The successful candidate will have experience in collaborative research documented in publications and more generally will have a history of publications that reflect experience in the analytical requirements of this position.

Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available. All employees of the Federal Government are subject to the conflict-of-interest statutes and regulations, including the Standards of Ethical Conduct. The first round of reviews is expected to occur on or about July 12, 2021 however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
